Bourke Leads the Way Again as Blue Hen Harriers Place Ninth at IC4A Championships

BRONX, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s cross country squads closed out the 2009 season with a pair of top 10 team finishes at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships Saturday at the Van Cortlandt State Park.

The Delaware women placed eighth overall with 218 points while the Blue Hen men posted a ninth place showing with 230 points. Duke won its second straight men’s IC4A team title while Boston College captured the women’s ECAC championship. William & Mary was second in both races. The race included the top teams in the East.

Senior Chris Bourke (at right in photo) once again led the Blue Hen men as he covered the eight-kilometer course in a time of 26:01.3 for a 19th place showing while senior Julia Somers once again paced the UD women with a 29th place showing over the five-kilometer layout. Bourke has led the Hens in five of the six races he has competed in this season while Somers has been the top finisher for the UD women in six of seven races this season.

Duke won the men’s team title followed by William & Mary, George Mason, LaSalle, Columbia, Marist, Syracuse, Princeton, Delaware, Massachusetts, Saint Joseph’s, Duquesne, and Harvard in the 13-team field. On the women’s side, Boston College was followed by William & Mary, James Madison, Stony Brook, West Virginia, Syracuse, Duquesne, Delaware, Harvard, Columbia, LaSalle, and Saint Joseph’s in the 12-team field.

The Delaware men placed eight runners in the top 100 as Gregg Cantwell was 34th (26:17.9), Ed Bonnevie was 56th (26:41.0), Nick Pyle was 57th (26:41.4), Nate Parmenter was 65th (26:49.4), Taylor Hinson finished 88th (27:15.8), Andy Weaver was 92nd (27:20.4), and Kevin Kemmerle placed 96th (27:26.8).

The Blue Hen women put all but one runner in the top 100 as Jessie Ermak was 33rd (18:15.5), Karen Mandrachia placed 55th (18:39.1), Christine Sloat was 58th (18:43.8), Sophia Kauffman had a 60th place showing (18:46.0), Katy Loughran was 66th (18:51.2), Katie Deinert was 71st (18: 55.1), Kellyn Wright was 76th (18:57.9), Alison Zukowski finished 78th (18:59.5), and Jen Watunya placed 98th (19:42.1).
