 Riley Places 20th as Blue Hen Men Claim Top 10 Finish

DAVIS, WV -- The University of Delaware men's squad placed ninth overall and the Blue Hen women finished 20th as a team at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Regionals Saturday morning at the Canaan Valley Resort.

The Villanova men captured the men's title with 40 points, outdistancing Georgetown (45), Princeton, and LaSalle in the 26-team field. Delaware placed ninth overall, five spots better than last year, with 247 total points.

In the women's race, Georgetown took team honors with 50 points to outlast runner-up Villanova (57), Penn State (111), West Virginia (131), and Princeton (144) in the 27-team field. Delaware placed 20th with a team total of 574. The top two teams for both the men and women qualified for the NCAA Championships Nov. 25 at Indiana State University.

Delaware junior Pat Riley (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) led the Blue Hens for the seventh straight time this season with a 21st place finish in 31:27.7 over the 10,000 meter course.

Also for the Hens, sophomore Matt Harrell (Middletown, MD HS) was 34th (31:47.2), senior Mike Sadowsky (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) was 40th (31:51.8), senior Pat Boettcher (William Penn/Newark, DE) was 73rd (32:38.2), freshman Kevin Duprey (Lampeter-Strasburg/Strasburg, PA) was 90th (33:02.1), senior Carl Kinney (Middletown/Townsend, DE) was 96th (33:08.9), and senior Dave Finneran (Rutherford/Rutherford, NJ ) was 130th (34:11.1). Riley improved seven places from last season while Sadowsky moved up 41 spots.

On the women's side, Delaware was led by senior Erin Gemmill (Penn Manor/Lancaster, PA) who paced the Hens for the seventh straight time this season with a 68th place finish in 23:06.4 over the 6,000 meter course.

Also for the Hens, freshman Jennifer Kutney (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) was 97th (23:52.0), sophomore Kate Klim (Barnstable/Cummaquid, MA) was 135th (24:52.1), freshman Sari Weissbard (Fairlawn/Fairlawn, NJ) was 140th (25:07.3), sophomore Sarah Bochet (Trumbull/Trumbull, CT) was 157th (25:31.1), freshman Lauren Shaub (Wyomissing/Wyomissing, PA) was 160th (25:33.7), and freshman Allison Behrle (Stonewall Jackson/Manassas, VA) was 167th (26:00.4).

Mike Smith of Georgetown was the men's winner with a time of 30:28.9 while Megan Metcalfe of West Virginia won the women's race with a time of 20:32.0.

The Blue Hens will close out the 2002 season next Saturday at the IC4A (men) and ECAC (women) championships at Van Cortland State Park in New York City.
