 NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware men’s cross country and track and field head coach Jim Fischer has announced his team captains for the 2008-09 season.
Senior Greg Cantwell (at right), Alex Gambogi, and Kevin Kemmerle, and junior Nick Pyle have been named co-captains for the cross country team while Cantwell, senior Nick Morrisey, and junior Chase Renoll have been selected captains for the indoor and outdoor track and field teams.
Cantwell, a senior from Port Jefferson, N.Y. (Ward Melville High School), has earned seven letters in cross country and track and field during his career but missed all but one cross country race last season due to an injury. He posted three top 10 finishes and was 36th at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in cross country in 2006 and placed fourth in the 5,000 meters at the 2007 CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Gambogi, a biology major from Wilmington, Del. (Salesianum HS), has earned three letters in his career. He competed in four cross country meets during the 2007 season and placed 10th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2008 CAA Outdoor Track Championships. He earned the program’s David A. Sharp Academic Excellence Award this past spring and will serve as vice-president of the UD Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) this fall.
Kemmerle, a health and physical education major from Dover, Del. (Dover HS), has earned three letters while at Delaware and competed in all eight cross country meets during the 2007 campaign, posting four top 20 finishes and placing 32nd at the CAA Championships. During the outdoor season, he won the 5,000 meters at the Delaware Open and placed 10th in the 10,000 meters at the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He earned the program’s Dr. D. Kenneth Steers Memorial Scholarship this past spring and will serve as treasurer of SAAC during the 2008-09 season.
Pyle, an English education major from Newark, Del. (St. Mark’s HS), has earned three letters for the Blue Hens. He competed in all eight cross country meets during the 2007 season and placed in the top four times. He was Delaware’s top finisher at the CAA Championships with a 16th place showing and was selected as the team’s Most Improved Athlete. During the the 2008 outdoor track & field season, he placed eighth in the 10,000 meter race at the CAA Championships.
Morrisey, a mechanical engineering major from Colonia, N.J. (Union Catholic HS), has earned two letters in outdoor track and field for the Blue Hens. He has posted five career first place finishes in relay events and placed fourth in both the 4 x 100 meter relay and 4 x 400 meter relay at the 2008 CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He also placed fourth in the 4 x 100 meter relay and was 14th in the 200 meters at the 2007 CAA outdoor meet.
Renoll, a history major from York, Pa. (Spring Grove HS), has earned two letters each in indoor and outdoor track and field as a weight thrower at Delaware. He has posted four career top 10 finishes in throwing events at the CAA Outdoor Championships, winning the 2008 shot put title, placing third in the shot put in 2007, fifth in the discus in 2007, and 10th in the discus in 2008. He has qualified for the IC4A regionals twice and placed 18th in the discus in 2007.
