Third as Riley Leads the Way Once

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The University
of Delaware men's and women's cross country teams each
placed third at the Colonial Athletic Association
Championships Saturday at the Eastern State Cross Country
Course at the College of William & Mary.
Host William & Mary won the men's
team title for the second straight year and seventh time in
the last nine years with a conference record 17 points while
James Madison captured the women's crown with a score of 22
points. JMU won its second title in the last three
years.
In the men's race, James Madison placed
second with 58 points followed by Delaware (81), Virginia
Commonwealth, George Mason, Hofstra, UNC Wilmington, and
Towson. In the women's race, JMU was followed by William
& Mary (38), Delaware (81), Virginia Commonwealth, UNC
Wilmington, Towson, George Mason, Hofstra, and Old
Dominion.
Delaware was making its first ever
appearance at the CAA championships after competing the last
10 years in the America East conference. The UD men placed
fourth at the America East meet a year ago while the UD
women placed fifth a year ago. It was the UD women's best
finish since winning the America East title in
1995.
The Blue Hens had two individual Top 10
finishers on the day as junior Pat Riley was fourth
in the men's race and senior Aimee Alexander was
sixth in the women's race.
Riley, who has led the Blue Hens in every
race this season, covered the 8,000-meter course in 24:43.1
and was the only runner in the top 10 not from William &
Mary. Tribe senior Sean Graham won the individual title with
a time of 24:25.9.
Also for the UD men, Pat Boettcher
placed 18th (25:42.0), Mike Sadowsky was 19th
(25:43.4), Matt Swierzbinski was 28th (26:28.3),
Carl Kinney was 31st (26:45.0), Kevin Winchell
was 32nd (26:49.5), Dave Finneran was 34th (26:54.7),
Pete Kelly was 36th (27:03.3), Mike Innis was
45th (27:29.7), Matt Harrell was 47th (27:33.0), and
Chris Ward was 55th (28:09.5).
For the UD women, Alexander, who has led
the Hens in all but one race this year, covered the
6,000-meter course in 21:41.9 to place sixth overall. James
Madison junior Mollie DeFrancesco was the overall winner
with a time of 20:57.8.
Also for the Hens, Karen Reber was
16th (22:36.6), Sarah Johnson was 17th (22:37.7),
Monica Marchetta placed 23rd (22:46.2), Kate
Klim was 30th (23:20.4), Jenn Krisch finished
33rd (23:27.0), Ashley Olsen was 37th (23:49.1),
Krista Kugler was 52nd (24:17.3), Cristin
Romano was 59th (25:47.0), Lisa Salvatore was
62nd (24:52.3), Mary Martini was 63rd (24:55.4), and
Tess Beinke was 71st (25:20.0).
