Blue Hens Take Five Firsts; Five Seconds to Place Second

 

LEWISBURG, PA -- The University of Delaware men captured five first place finishes to place second in the team standings and Caron Marra (Newark HS) won the 1,000 meter run for the Blue Hen women to highlight University of Delaware performances at the Bucknell Indoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Host Bucknell won the men's meet with 177 points, edging Delaware (152) and St. Francis of Pennsylvania (107) in the seven-team meet. On the women's side, host Bucknell ran away with the win with 253 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Mt. St. Mary's (89). Delaware was fifth with 41 points in the seven-team meet.

The Blue Hen men, who captured team titles in their first two meets of the season, captured five first place finishes and five more second place finishes on the day.

For the Delaware men, Asher Ailey (West Windsor-Plainsboro/Plainsboro, NJ) won the 200 meters (22.76); Tom Marando (St. Mark's HS) won the shot put (51-10 1/2); Pat Boettcher (William Penn HS) captured the 800 meters (1:56.74); Brian Demlein (Christian Brothers/DeWitt, NY) won the 500 meters (1:06.79), and Sam Yarrington (Panther Valley/Sewickley, PA) was the winner in the 35 lb. weight throw (50-11).

Taking second place finishes for the Hens were the 4 x 800m relay (7:54.54) and 4 x 400m relay (3:27.17); Peter Lenz (McKean HS) in the 500 meters (1:07.57); Mike DiGennaro (Hamilton-Wenham/Essex, MA) in the mile (4:17.33), and Pat Riley (St. Mark's HS) in the 5,000 meters (15:22.71). Ailey also placed third in the 400 meters (50.93).

Marra was the lone winner on the women's side for Delaware, capturing the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:59.27. Placing second for the Blue Hens was Carol Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ) in the pole vault (9-6) while placing third was Laura Dietrich (Northeastern/York, PA) in the triple jump (34-7 1/2). Dietrich also placed seventh in the 400 meters (1:05.17) while Jennifer Lublanecki (West Morris Central/Long Valley, NJ) was fourth in both the 55 meters (7.58) and 200 meters (26.85).
