Blue Hens
Place Third at America East Meet; DiGennaro Wins 5,000m
Race
BOSTON -- Senior
Mike DiGennaro won the 5,000 meter race to lead the
University of Delaware men to a third place team finish and
senior Caltha Seymour captured the weight throw to lead the
Blue Hen women to a sixth place team finish at the America
East Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday at the
Boston University Armory.
DiGennaro
(Hamilton-Wenham/Essex, MA) won the 5,000 meters in 14:51.14
and placed second in the 3,000 meters in 8:27.34 to lead the
defending champion Blue Hen men to the third place finish.
Seymour (A.I. duPont HS) won the weight throw with an ECAC
qualifying distance of 54-2 3/4 and also placed fifth in the
shot put (38-3 1/2) to lead the UD women.
Northeastern captured the
men's title with 128.5 points to outdistance New Hampshire
(114.5), Delaware (104); Boston University, Maine, Vermont,
and Towson in the seven-team field. Boston University won
its second straight women's team title with 162 points.
Vermont was second with 120 points followed by Northeastern,
New Hampshire, Maine, Delaware, and Towson in the seven-team
field.
Northeastern and Boston
University each won five men's titles, including double
winner Dave Klemic who won the long jump and 55 meters for
Northeastern.
On the women's side,
Northeastern's Nikiya Reid won three events, capturing the
55 meters, 55 meter hurdles, and 200 meters while Boston
University's Christine Bertram won two of the Terriers' six
individual titles by winning both the 500 meters and 1,000
meters.
The Delaware men posted
four second place finishes as the 4 x 800 meter relay team
of Pat Boettcher (William Penn HS), Mark Coyle
(East/West Chester, PA), Troy Bockius (Dover HS), and
Joe Quigley (William Penn HS) ran to an IC4A
qualifying time of 7:44.84; freshman Asher Ailey
(West Windsor/Plainsboro, NJ) was second in the 400 meters
(49.50), DiGennaro was second in the 3,000m, and Tom
Marando (St. Mark's HS) was second in the shot put (50-4
1/2).
Also for the Hens, the 4
x 400 meter relay team of Emeka Igwe (Dickinson HS),
Brian Demlein (Christian Bros./DeWitt, NY), Peter
Lenz (McKean HS), and Ailey was third (3:20.46), Ian
Bass (St. Joseph's/St. Croix, VI) was third in the long
jump (21-6 3/4), Bockius was third in the 1,000m (2:28.61),
Quigley was third in the 800m (1:52.77), John Marino
(Iona Prep/Yorktown, NY) was third in the 55m hurdles
(7.93), and Eric Sands (Tunkhannock, Pa. HS) was
third in the shot put (46-6 1/4).
Demlein was also fourth
in the 500m (1:05.53), Ailey was fifth in the 200m (22.57),
and Boettcher was fourth in the 800m (1:54.48).
The Delaware women picked
up three second place finishes as sophomore Annemarie Quinn
(Strath-Haven/Wallingford, PA) was second in the high jump
(5-4 1/4), junior Carol Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ) broke
her own school record in the pole vault (10-5 1/2) to place
second, and sophomore Aimee Alexander (Carmel/Stormville,
NY) was second in the 3,000 meters with an ECAC qualifying
time of 10:01.76.
Quinn also placed fourth
in the long jump (17-2) while the 4 x 400 meter relay team
was third in a time of 4:25.30. (17-2), and senior Caron
Marra (Newark HS) was fifth in the mile
(5:06.02).
