Mike DiGennaro Captures Two Distance Events to Lead Blue Hens to First Place

 

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Mike DiGennaro captured two events to lead the University of Delaware men to a first place finish and Blue Hen women took four first place finishes to place third overall at the season opening Delaware Indoor Track and Field Invitational Friday night at the Delaware Field House.

The Delaware men, the defending America East Conference champions, posted a score of 227 to win the men's event, outlasting Delaware State (134) and Howard (57) in the three team event.

In the women's race, Princeton won seven individual events to take the team title with 218 points. Delaware State was second with 122 followed by Delaware (100) and Howard (46).

In the men's race, DiGennaro (Hamilton Wenham/Essex, MA) won both the mile (4:32.12) and 3,000 meters (8:59.86) to lead the Blue Hens. Also capturing individual titles for Delaware were freshman Asher Ailey (West Windsor/Plainsboro, NJ) in the 400 meters (51.42), Mark Coyle (East/West Chester, PA) in the 800 meters (1:59.95), Jeff McIlvaine (Upper Dublin/Oreland, PA) in the pole vault (12-5 1/2), Michael Reh i(Middletown/Middletown, NY) the triple jump (43-7 3/4), and Sam Yarrington (Quaker Valley/Sewickley, PA) in the 35 lb. weight throw (51 3/4). Ailey also placed second in the 60 meters and the 200 meters.

Winning events for the Delaware State men were Danerian McCants in the 200 meters (23.44), Robert Moore in the 500 meters (1:08.08), LaShaun Smith in the 1,000 meters (2:45.30), Casey Swain in the 60 meter hurdles (8.31), Adrian Nelson in the high jump (6-9), Tavaris Walters in the long jump (20-9), and Ean Rose in the shot put (55-1 1/2).

On the women's side, Delaware captured four first place finishes as Caron Marra (Newark/Newark, DE) won the mile (5:14.85), Annemarie Quinn (Strath-Haven/Wallingford, PA) won the high jump (5-8), Carol Oliveri (St. Rose/Brick, NJ) won the pole vault (9-10), and Caltha Seymour (A.I. duPont/Hockessin, DE) won the 20 lb. weight throw (47-9 3/4). Marra was also second in the 1,000 meters in 3:04.52.

Taking first place finishes for Delaware State were Latisha Conte in the 200 meters (26.42) and the long jump (17-9 1/2); ; Kylene Bines in the 60 meters (8.00), Keyna Henning in the 400 meters (1:00.02), and Jessica Gilbert in the triple jump (38-7 1/2).
