Wasser Wins Shot Put with Personal Best for Delaware at Princeton Invitational

athlete photoPRINCETON, NJ -- The University of Delaware dominated the shot put event at the Princeton Indoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday afternoon as Jared Wasser (right) won the men’s event and Rachel Young was the women’s winner at Jadwin Gymnasium.

Blue Hen track and field athletes captured 16 top 10 finishes on the women’s side while the Delaware men posted 14 top 10 finishes to highlight the non-scoring meet. Among the other teams competing were host Princeton, Columbia, Kutztown, Millersville, Lehman, Muhlenberg, Franklin & Marshall, New Haven, Monmouth, and Washington & Lee.

Wasser (Wootton/North Potomac, MD), first-year transfer from Robert Morris College, captured his first meet title for the Blue Hens as he set a personal record with a throw of 53-0 to capture the shot put competition.

Young, a junior from Sparta, NJ (Sparta), captured the women’s shot put title with a toss of 44-4 and also placed fourth in the weight throw (45-9 3/4) to lead the Blue Hen women. Young, who also won the shot put title at the season-opening Jack Pyrah Invitational, has now won four career indoor meet titles and seven meet titles overall.

Also for the UD women, Kelli McDonald posted a personal-best leap of 11-9 3/4 to place second in the pole vault, Paula Green was second in the 200 meters (25.99) and fifth in the 60 meters (8.05), Alexi Capsouras was third in the 60 meter hurdles and fourth in the 500 meters (1:19.76), Julia Somers was fourth in the mile (5:12.20), Angela Pollino was fifth in the shot put (35-1) and 13th in the weight throw (34-3 1/4), Sari Weissbard was fifth in the mile (5:17.17), Amy Miller was fifth in the pole vault (10-0), Jessica Leitsch was fifth in the 1,000 meters (3:16.12) and 14th in the 400 meters (1:05.20), and Laura Heenan was fifth in the 400 meters (1:02.38) and 10th in the 800 meters (2:26.58).

Also for the Delaware men, Brad Dodson was second in the 800 meters (1:56.35), the 4 x 400 meter relay team was second in 3:33.25, Will Jurkowski was second in the mile (4:19.95), Brandon Swartout was fifth in the long jump (20-9), and Dennis Spence was sixth in the long jump (20-7) and 10th in the 200 meters (23.74).
