PRINCESS ANNE, MD -- A pair of freshman took home first place finishes for the University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Coach O Invitational Saturday at the William P. Hytch Athletics Center.
Brooke Maguire (Marblehead/Marblehead, MA) won the women’s 3,000 meter run in a time of 10:42.59 while Chris Martens (Branford/Branford, CT) set a UD freshman record in winning the pole vault with a leap of 14-6 in the non-scoring invitational meet. Martens broke the school record of 14-0 shared by Paul Sheppard in 1982 and by Matt Johnson in 2003.
The Delaware women posted 18 top 10 finishes on the day while the Blue Hen men had 19 top 10 performances. Among the other teams competing were host UMES, Navy, Norfolk State, Delaware State, Hampton, South Carolina State, and Coppin State.
Also for the Delaware women, Kelli McDonald was second in the pole vault (10-8), Julia Somers was third in the 3,000 meters (10:48.53), Angela Pollino was fourth in the weight throw (34-2 3/4) and sixth in the shot put (35 1/4), Jennifer Kramer was fifth in the weight throw (28-8 1/2), and the distance medley relay team of Alexi Capsouras, Jessica Leitsch, Liz Paul, and Asha Quant was second in a time of 13:12.83. Capsouras was also sixth in the 4 x 400 meter relay (4:13.51) and ninth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.53), Leitsch was also seventh in the 4 x 400 meter relay and mile run (5:37.60), Paul was seventh in the 4 x 400 meter relay and ninth in the mile (5:49.61), and Quant was ninth in the long jump (16 8 1/2).
Also for the Delaware men, Brad Dodson was second in the 800 meters (2:00.55) and third in the distance medley relay (10:25.91), Matt Arbaugh was second in the pole vault (13-6), Gregg Cantwell was third in the mile (4:34.43), Kyle Casella was third in the shot put (45-11 1/4), and David Divirgilio and Brian Picariello tied for third in the pole vault (13-0). Dodson was joined in the distance medley relay by John Fuja, Will Jurkowski, and Kyle Schmid.
Both Delaware teams will next compete Jan. 13 at the New York University Invitational at the New York City Armory.
