Wasser Second in Shot Put as Delaware Places Sixth at Fordham Invitational

NEW YORK -- Senior Rachel Young was the University of Delaware’s lone individual champion as she captured the women’s shot put with a school record throw of 46-feet, 1/2-inch at the Fordham Invitational Friday night at the New York City Armory.

The Delaware women posted 22 top 10 finishes and placed third in the team standings with 94 points. St. John’s won the team title with 101 points followed by Southern Connecticut State, Delaware, Saint Joseph’s, LaSalle, Fordham, Monmouth, Long Island, Manhattan, Holy Cross, Marist, and Fairleigh Dickinson in the 12-team field.

Senior Jared Wasser (at right) was the top Delaware men’s finisher as he placed second in the shot put (54-3 3/4), the second best toss in school history, to lead the Blue Hens to a sixth place team finish. Rutgers won the team title with 145 points followed by Southern Connecticut, Manhattan, LaSalle, Fordham, Delaware, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, Saint Joseph’s, Marist, New York University, Long Island, Holy Cross, Concordia in the 14-team field. The Blue Hens posted 13 top 10 finishes.

Also for the Delaware women, Michelle Gomes places second in both the 60 meters (7.83) and 200 meters (25.48), posting the second best times in school history in each event.

The 4 x 800 meter relay team also placed second (9:58.13) while Amanda Marshall was third in the shot put (42-1 1/4) and ninth in the weight throw (38-10 1/2), Kelli McDonald was third in the pole vault (10-6), Asha Quant was fourth in the long jump (17-8 1/4) and seventh in the 400 meters (1:01.30), Alexi Capsouras was fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.41) and sixth in the 500 meters (1:19.55), and the 4 x 400 meter relay was third (4:00.63).

Also for the Delaware men, Gregg Cantwell was fourth in the mile (4:20.46), Chase Renoll was fourth in the shot put (50-4 1/2), Conrad Rapp was fourth in the pole vault (13-11 1/4), Tyler Mayforth was sixth in the 3,000 meters (8:59.40), and Matt Arbaugh was sixth in the pole vault (12-11 1/2).
