HAVERFORD, PA -- Amanda Marshall won the shot put and Kelli McDonald captured the pole vault to lead the University of Delaware women and Chase Renoll was second in the shot put and Dave DiVirgilio (at right) placed second in the pole vault for the UD men as the Blue Hen indoor track and field teams opened their 2006-07 seasons Friday night by competing at the Jack Pyrah Invitational hosted by Villanova University at the Haverford College Field House.
The Delaware women took 10 competitors to the meet and all placed in the top 10 led by Marshall and McDonald. The Delaware men had 15 athletes compete and posted 14 top 10 finishes led by Renoll and DiVirgilio.
Marshall won the shot put (40-8 1/4 - No. 4 all-time in UD history) and was fifth in the weight throw (40-6 1/4), McDonald captured the pole vault (11-3 3/4), Stephanie Cronk was second in the weight throw (45-1) and ninth in the shot put (32-6 1/4), Annie Fulton was second in the triple jump (33-7 1/2) and sixth in the long jump (15-9 1/2), Asha Quant was second in the long jump (16-10), sixth in the 300 meters (42.73), and eighth in the 55 meters (7.62), and Michelle Gomes was second in the 55 meters (7.26 - No. 3 all-time at UD), and her third place time in the 300 meters (40.74) set a new Delaware record, breaking the mark of 42.49 set by current teammate Brittany Wright in 2005.
On the men’s side, Renoll was second in the shot put with a throw of 49-1 3/4 in his Delaware debut while DiVirgilio was second in the pole vault (13-11 1/4) and 20th in the 55 meters (7.07).
Also for the UD men, Greg Stirparo was third in the weight throw (44-5 1/4), Mike Roth was third in the mile (4:31.93), Brandon Swartout was fourth in the triple jump (41-3) and sixth in the long jump (21-4 3/4), and Matt Arbaugh was fourth in the pole vault (13-5 1/2).
Both teams will resume action in the New Year when they travel to the Fordham University Invitational in New York City Jan. 5.
