NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field squad posted four first place finishes to capture the team title and Will Jurkowski (at right) won the 800 meters to lead the Blue Hen men to a fourth place team finish at the Thomson Invitational Indoor Track and Field meet Saturday at the Delaware Field House.
Delaware athletes posted 56 top 10 finishes during the meet, which included nearly 50 men’s and women’s teams. Temple won the men’s Division I team title, Moravian won the men’s Division II-III team title, Delaware won the women’s Division I crown, and Adelphi was the winner in the women’s Division II-III title.
The Delaware women had four first place winners as Liz Paul won the 5,000 meters (18:43.26), Christina Antonopoulos won the 1,000 meters (3:02.74), Asha Quant captured the 60 meters (7.85), and Kelli McDonald was the winner of the pole vault (11-9 3/4). Quant also placed second in the 200 meters (25.63) and third in the long jump (17-9).
Karen Mandrachia was second in both the 1,000 meters (3:07.11) and the 4 x 800 meter relay (9:49.15) that also included Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, and Stephanie Taylor.
Also for the UD women, Kellyn Wright was second in the 800 meters (2:21.59), Kristi Cox was second in the 400 meters (58.83), and Laura Chirico was second in the pole vault (11-5 3/4).
Jurkowski was Delaware’s lone winner on the men’s side as he won the 800 meters in a time of 1:57.09. Brandon Swartout was second in the long jump (22-1), Tim Brock was third in the 1,000 meters (2:37.53), Conrad Rapp was third in the pole vault (14-3 1/4), John Viotto was third in the shot put (51-7 3/4), and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Adam Cornelisse, Mike Goldwasser, Jurkowski, and Nick Morrisey was third in a time of 3:30.43.
Jeremy Simkins placed fifth in both the 60 meter hurdles (8.84) and 500 meters (1:07.64) while Brad Dodson was fifth in the mile (4:27.25) and Mike Zeberkiewicz was fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:39.27) and the two teamed with Brock and Phil Weigel to place fifth in the 4 x 800 meter relay (8:16.30).
