Delaware Indoor Track & Field Teams Each Place Second, Win 10 Total Events at Colonial Invitational

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams each finished second in the team standings and had five individual champions apiece to highlight action at the Colonial Invitational hosted by the Blue Hens Saturday at the Delaware Field House.

The inaugural meet, the final home indoor event for the Blue Hens this winter, included only teams from the Colonial Athletic Association, which does not sponsor an indoor championship meet.

Towson won the women’s team title with 177 points followed by Delaware, Virginia Commonwealth, Northeastern, and James Madison. VCU won the men’s team title with 272 points followed by Delaware and Northeastern.

Delaware had six double winners on the day as Yianna Antonopoulos won the mile (5:12.20) and was part of the winning 4 x 800 meter relay (9:31.54) with Karen Mandrachia, Kim Atkins, and Kelly Wright, Mandrachia also won the 800 meters (2:16.49), and Cristine Marquez captured the 500 meters (1:16.63) and ran a leg of the winning 4 x 400 meter relay (3:56.43) with Asia Hollis, Alexi Capsouras, and Kristi Cox. Mandrachia’s time in the 800 meters was the third best in UD history.

For the men, Vinny Fronczkowski (at right) won the 400 meters (50.74) and teamed with Nick Morrisey, Justin Molligan, and Jeremy Simkins to capture the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:23.57), James Townsend won the 1,000 meters (2:33.56) and was joined by Glenn Puzio, Kevin Sadeghipour, and Corey Wall on the winning 4 x 800 meter relay team (8:10.87), and Simkins also won the 500 meters (1:06.74) and was third in the 60 meter hurdles (8.69).

Also for the UD women, Christina Antonopoulos won the 3,000 meters with the seventh best time in school history (10:07.55), Amanda Marshall was second in the weight throw (56-9 1/4) and third in the shot put (41 1/2), Capsouras was second in the 60 meter hurdles (9.18), Sophie Kauffman was second in the 5,000 meters (18:56.91), and Marquez was second in the 200 meters (25.43).

Also for the UD men, John Hally won the 60 meter hurdles (8.52), Wall was second in the 800 meters (1:58.24), Morrisey was second in the 200 meters (22.95), Jim Schwendtner was second in the weight throw (54-2), John Viotto was second in the shot put with the third best throw in school history (53-5 1/2), Kevin Kemmerle was second in the 5,000 meters (15:59.38), and Matt O’Brian was second in the 3,000 meters (9:07.51).
