Viotto Places 12th in Shot Put to Lead Delaware at IC4A Championships

BOSTON -- The University of Delaware women’s indoor track and field team posted five All-East performances on the way to an all-time best 16th place team finish at the second and final day of the ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center.

The Delaware men also closed out their season and placed 51st overall with two top 25 finishes Sunday at the IC4A Championships at the Boston University Armory.

Duke won the women’s ECAC team title while the University at Albany captured the men’s IC4A team title.

The Blue Hen women enjoyed one of their finest days ever at the ECAC meet as UD athletes posted five top seven finishes and posted the best team finish in school history.

Leading the way was senior Amanda Marshall who placed third in the weight throw as she broke her own school record with a toss of 58-feet, 3 1/4-inches. Her third place finish was the second best ever by a Blue Hen athlete at the meet behind Candy Cashell, who won the high jump title in 1986.

Also for the UD women, the distance medley relay team of Karen Mandrachia, Kristi Cox, Kellyn Wright, and Christina Antonopoulos placed fourth overall with the second best time in school history of 11:49.88, Kelli McDonald was sixth in the pole vault with a career-best leap of 12-5 1/2, and Cristine Marquez was sixth in the 200 meters (24.82) and seventh in the 400 meters (55.93). Each earned All-East honors for placing in the top eight.

Also for the UD women, Laura Chirico placed 14th in the pole vault with a leap of 11-7 3/4.

The Delaware men had two athletes compete on Sunday as John Viotto (at right) finished 12th in the shot put with a toss of 52 1/2 while Gregg Cantwell was 25th in the 5,000 meters with a clocking of 14:48.97. Viotto improved upon a 21st place finish a year ago.
