BOSTON -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will be taking one their largest contingents in recent years this weekend when the Blue Hens compete at the ECAC (women) Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center and IC4A (men) Championships at the Boston University Armory.

A total of 25 Blue Hen student-athletes, 14 men and 11 women, will be competing in 12 different events over the two-day meet which begins on Saturday. Athletes must meet qualifying standards during the season to compete at the championships.

Competing for the Delaware men will be John Viotto (at right) in the shot put (Sunday at 11:30 a.m.), Gregg Cantwell in the 5,000 meters (Sunday at 1:45 p.m.), the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Corey Wall, Nate Twer, James Townsend, Mike Tait (Saturday at 4:25 p.m.), the distance medley relay team of Kevin Sadeghipour, Kyle Chou, Tywan Brooks, and George Vernon (Saturday at 4 p.m.), and the 4 x 400 meter relay squad of Jeremy Simkins, Nick Morrisey, Justin Molligan, and Vinny Fronczkowski (Saturday at 4:50 p.m.).

The Delaware men’s distance medley relay team of Twer, Townsend, Tait, and Simkins also qualified as did Wall in the 1,000 meets but neither will compete at the championships this weekend in order to concentrate on other events.

On the women’s side, competing for the Blue Hens will be Amanda Marshall in the weight throw (Sunday at noon), Cristine Marquez in the 200 meters (Saturday at 3:30 p.m.) and 400 meters (Saturday at 2:20 p.m.), Kelli McDonald and Laura Chirico in the pole vault (Sunday at 11 a.m.), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Marquez, Asia Hollis, Kristi Cox, and Alexi Capsouras (Saturday at 4:25 p.m.), the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Christina Antonopoulos, Karen Mandrachia, Kellyn Wright, and Yianna Antonopoulos (Saturday at 4:40 p.m.), and the distance medley relay group of Hollis, Christina Antonopoulos, Mandrachia, and Wright (Sunday at 1 p.m.).

Also qualifying but not competing this weekend will be Marquez in the 500 meters, Christina Antonopoulos in the mile, and Mandrachia in the mile and in the 1,000 meters.

Nine Delaware athletes are veterans of IC4A and ECAC competition, including Cantwell and Marquez, who will each be competing for the third time in their career.

Marquez has posted four career Top 10 finishes at the ECAC meet, placing fourth in the 400 meters in 2008, eighth in the 400 meters in 2007, and ninth in the 4 x 400 meter relay in both 2007 and 2008. She earned All-East honors for her top eight finishes. Cantwell was 16th in the distance medley relay in 2006 and 19th in the 3,000 meters in 2007 for the UD men.

Also for the UD women, Kristi Cox was ninth in the 4 x 400 meter relay at the 2008 meet, Marshall was 13th in the weight throw in 2008, Kelli McDonald was 11th in the pole vault in 2008 and 14th in the event in 2007, Chirico was 16th in the pole vault in 2008, and Capsouras placed 26th in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 2006.
