Delaware Men Place Second at Delaware Invitational; Win Four Events

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams returned to action for the first time in a month Friday night and made a strong showing as the UD men placed second and women third at the Delaware Invitational Meet held at Delaware Field House.

Blue Hen individuals captured seven first place finishes, including a record-setting performance by senior Amanda Marshall in the women’s weight throw. The meet, which included 841 athletes on 25 teams, took nearly six hours to complete.

Monmouth captured the men’s Division I title with 224 points, edging past runner-up Delaware, Delaware State, Saint Joseph’s, and Villanova. West Chester won the Division II/III team title with 158 points to easily outdistance Millersville, Ursinus, Lincoln, Wesley, Swarthmore, and Cabrini.

On the women’s side, Navy won the Division I title with 160.33 points to down Delaware State, Delaware, Monmouth, Saint Joseph’s, Coppin State, and Villanova. West Chester also captured the Division II/III team crown with 113 points to edge Cabrini followed by Ursinus, Millersville, Swarthmore, and Lincoln.

Delaware, competing for the first time since the season-opening Pyrah Invitational Dec. 5 at Haverford, posted seven first place finishes and 82 top 10 finishes on the evening.

Senior Amanda Marshall led the way for the Hens as she captured the weight throw title with a toss of 54-feet, 10 1/4-inches, breaking the previous school mark of 54-9 1/4 by Brandy Connell in 2000. Marshall also placed third in the shot put with a toss of 39-1 1/4.

Other UD winners on the women’s side were the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Cristine Marquez, Asia Hollis, Kim Atkins, and Kristi Cox (4:06.68) and Jennifer Holly in the pole vault (11-3 3/4). Karen Mandrachia was second in the 1,000 meters (3:05.52), Yianna Antonopoulos was second in the 800 meters (2:26.71), Alexi Capsouras was second in the 60 meter hurdles (9.42), Christina Antonopoulos was third in the mile (5:10.91) and fourth in the 1,000 meters (3:11.6), and Cristine Marquez was third in both the 200 metes (26.17) and 400 meters (1:00.32).

On the men’s side, freshman Jim Schwendtner won his second straight meet title as he captured the weight throw and broke his own UD freshman record with a toss 54-feet, 3 3/4-inches. Also for the Hens, Nate Twer won the 3,000 meters (9:05.98), Gregg Cantwell (at right) won the mile (4:28.65) and was third in the 1,000 meters (2:40.05), and James Townsend captured the 1,000 meters (2:35.49).

George Vernon (mile), Corey Wall (800m), Nick Morrisey (200m), Jeremy Simkins (60m hurdles), Shane Ordway (pole vault), Kevin McCove (triple jump), John Viotto (shot put), and Brendan O’Hora (high jump) also posted second place finishes.
