University of Delaware Athletes Capture Five First Place Finishes at Lehigh’s John Covert Indoor Track Classic

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The University of Delaware women finished second in the team standings, the Blue Hen men were fourth, and 11 UD athletes captured first place finishes to highlight the John Covert Indoor Track and Field Classic hosted by Lehigh University Friday and Saturday at Rauch Field House.

Towson won the women’s team title with 81 points while Delaware was second with 69 in the 13-team field. Lock Haven won the men’s team competition with 131 points followed by Lehigh, East Stroudsburg, and Delaware in the 12-team field.

The Delaware women had three first place finishes as Yianna Antonopoulos won the mile (5:12.74), her twin sister Christina Antonopoulos captured the 800 meters (2:20.73), and the two teamed with Kellyn Wright and Karen Mandrachia to win the 4 x 800 meter relay in a time of 9:30.81, the second best time in school history.

In addition, Amanda Marshall placed second in the weight throw and in the process broke her own record with a throw of 56-2, bettering her previous mark of 54-10 1/4 set earlier this year.

The Blue Hen men had two first place finishes as John Viotto was the winner in the shot put with a toss of 52-1 and the 4 x 800 meter relay group of Mike Tait (at right), James Townsend, Nate Twer, and Glenn Puzio raced to a time of 4:28.60.

Also for the Delaware women, Mandrachia was second in the 800 meters (2:20.75), Kelli McDonald was second in the pole vault (10-11 1/2), Marshall was also second in the shot put (40-5 1/2), Julia Somers was second in the 5,000 meters (18:22.64), and Laura Chirico was fourth in the pole vault (10-11 1/2).

Also for the UD men, Shane Ordway was second in the pole vault (14-5 1/4), Tait was third in the 500 meters (1:08.25), Wall was fourth in the mile (4:28.60), Ross Shober was fourth in the long jump (21-10 1/4), Jamie Igo was fourth in the high jump (6-2), and Chase Renoll finished fourth in the shot put (49-3).
