Wall Wins 1,000 Meter for University of Delaware at Rider/Lafayette Indoor Track Invitational

NEW YORK -- University of Delaware athletes captured five events, including two by Cristine Marquez and a record-setting performance by Amanda Marshall, to highlight action at the Rider/Lafayette Indoor Track and Field Invitational Friday night at the New York City Armory.

The Delaware women captured four events as Marquez won the 400 meters in a time of 56.51 and teamed with Kristi Cox, Asia Hollis, and Alexi Capsouras to win the 4 x 400 meter relay in a time of 3:52.64 while Marshall won the weight throw and broke her own school record with a toss of 57-feet, 5 3/4-inches (old mark was 56-2 1/2), and Kelli McDonald won the pole vault with a leap of 12-3 1/2, the second best performance in school history.

On the men’s side, Corey Wall (at right) was the lone Blue Hen individual winner as he captured the 1,000 meters with a clocking of 2:29.74, the seventh best time in school history.

The Delaware women posted 18 top 10 finishes on the evening while the Blue Hen men had eight top 10 performances.

Also for the Delaware women, Marquez was second in the 200 meters (24.88), Laura Chirico was second in the pole vault (10-9 3/4), Kellyn Wright was third in the 800 meters (2:19.45), Christina Antonopoulos was third in the mile with the fourth best time in UD history (4:59.14), Karen Mandrachia was fourth in the mile (5:00.30), Marshall was fifth in the shot put (39-7 3/4), Leah Putman was seventh in the long jump (17-2) and 10th in the triple jump (35-8), Jen Watunya was seventh in the 5,000 meters (18:45.90), Megan Wiseman was ninth in the long jump (17-0), Cox was ninth in the 400 meters (59.20), Yianna Antonopoulos was ninth in the mile (5:07.81), Briana Gray was 10th in the high jump (5-1), and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Christina and Yianna Antonopoulos, Wright, and Mandrachia was 10th in 10:24.65.

Also for the Delaware men, Gregg Cantwell was second in the mile with the 10th best time in school history at 4:16.81, George Vernon was fourth in the 5,000 meters (15:10.35), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Jeremy Simkins, Nick Morrisey, Justin Molligan, and Vinny Fronczkowski was fifth in 3:20.67, the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Wall, James Townsend, Mike Tait, and Nate Twer was sixth (8:05.19), Townsend was sixth in the 1,000 meters (2:31.03), and Simkins was eighth in the 400 meters (49.84).

Both Delaware teams will return to action next weekend when they host the Colonial Invitational Feb. 21 at Delaware Field House.
