Thuma, Sadowsky Win
Events to Pace Blu
ANNAPOLIS, MD -- Ben Thuma
won the weight throw and Mike Sadowsky captured the
3,000 meters on the men's side and Erin Gemmill
continued her fine running by winning the women's mile to
highlight University of Delaware performances at the U.S.
Naval Academy Indoor Track and Field Invitational Saturday
at Halsey Field House.
Host Navy captured the team title for
both men and women in the five-team field. On the men's
side, Navy earned 208 points to win the team title followed
by LaSalle in second (123), Fordham in third (77), Delaware
in fourth (74), and Saint Joseph's in fifth (31). On the
women's side, the Mids earned 217. 5 points followed by
runner-up LaSalle (98.33), Saint Joseph's in third (76),
Fordham in fourth (69), and Delaware in fifth
(62.17).
Thuma (Northern York/Harrisburg, PA) won
his second weight throw title of the indoor season as he
claimed the weight throw title with a toss of 51-11 3/4 and
also placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 42 1/2.
Sadowsky (Brandywine/Wilmington, DE) won the 3,000 meters in
a time of 8:34.51, the fourth best time in school history.
Other top performances by the UD men saw
freshman Nick Riordan (Skaneateles/Skaneateles, NY)
placed second in the triple jump (40-9 1/4) and fourth in
the long jump, freshman Matt Johnson
(Christiana/Newark, DE) was second in the pole vault (14-0),
Mike Yost (Lake Forest/Felton, DE) was third in the
shot put (42-8 3/4) and fourth in the weight throw (48-9
1/2), Pat Boettcher (William Penn/New Castle, DE) was
fourth in the 1,000 meters (2:30.83), Jim DelGrosso
(Salesianum/Wilmington, DE) was fourth in the high jump (6-3
1/4), and John Morgan (San Clemente/Ladera Ranch, CA)
was fifth in the 800 meters (1:58.38) and sixth in the mile
(4:19.87).
On the women's side, Gemmill (Penn
Manor/Lancaster, PA) continued her outstanding indoor season
by capturing the mile (5:02.46), her fourth individual meet
title this winter, and placing second in the 1,000 meters
(2:56.25), the second best time in school
history.
Also for the UD women, freshman
Daniella Price (Chichester/Boothwyn, PA) recorded the
third best 55 meter time in school history (7.30) in placing
second in that event, Casey Bennett (Shelton/Shelton,
CT) was third in the pole vault (10-6), Kristen
Frustillo (Cardinal O'Hara/Newtown Square, PA) was
fourth in the 400 meters (1:00.71), Rachel Schultz
(Caesar Rodney/Dover, DE) was fourth in the 500 meters
(1:18.63), Laura Dietrich (Northeastern/York, PA) was
fourth in the triple jump (34-0 1/4), and Elizabeth
Russell (Red Bank/Little Silver, NJ) was fifth in both
the high jump (4-9) and the 55 meter hurdles
(8.87).
Both Delaware teams will return to action
this weekend when the Hens host the annual Thomson
Invitational at Delaware Field House Feb. 13-14.
