Red-Hot Lavey Has a Hand in Nine Goals to Spark Delaware Win

NEWARK, DE -- Junior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) had a hand in 9 of his team's 12 goals to lead the University of Delaware to a 12-5 America East men's lacrosse victory over Drexel Sunday night at Rullo Stadium.

The game was postponed 45 minutes and did not start until 8:15 p.m. due to lightning in the area.

Junior Jason Motta Scored Two Goals for the Hens

Lavey, Delaware's leading scorer this season with 48 points (19-29), scored two goals and tied his career-high and his own Rullo Stadium record with seven assists to help the Blue Hens (7-4, 3-0 America East) remain on top of the America East standings with their third straight win. The Hens have also won 10 straight league games over three seasons.

Drexel, which got as close as 8-4 early in the fourth quarter, dropped its fifth straight game to fall to 1-8, 0-4. Kevin Cooke and Dan Woods each had a goal and an assist for the Dragons, who lost to Delaware for the 22nd straight time since 1979.

Freshman Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD), the America East Rookie of the Week each of the last three weeks, scored three goals for the Blue Hens while fellow freshman R.C. Reed (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) added two goals and an assist and junior Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY) scored twice.

Reed was the hero of Delaware's 8-7 overtime win over No. 11 Hofstra Friday night when he scored the game-winner one minute into overtime.

Delaware outshot Drexel 41-24 with Blue Hen goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley, Pa. HS) posting the victory with 12 saves. Drexel's Jordie Olivella also posted 12 saves for the Dragons.

Lavey, who also dished out seven assists in a 15-8 win over Butler March 18, assisted on Delaware's first four goals to give the Hens a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter. He then scored with 4:57 left in the opening half and assisted Metzbower on a goal 1:43 before halftime to give UD a 7-2 halftime cushion.

Drexel cut the lead to 8-4 on back-to-back goals from Jeff Spano and Mark Brundage to cut the lead to 8-4 with 13:44 left to play, but the Hens responded with four straight goals to put the game away.
