11-Game Conference Win Streak; Teams Will Meet Again
Wednesday
WEST HARTFORD, CT The University of
Hartford ended the University of Delawares three-year
conference winning streak and the Blue Hens chance for
an outright America East title with a 10-7 mens
lacrosse victory Wednesday night at Al-Marzook Field.
The game, played in a cold, steady rain, was the
resumption of a game started this past Friday when heavy
rain and lightning suspended the contest with Hartford

The 15th ranked Blue Hens (8-5, 4-1), who had won 11
straight conference game since 1998, were looking for their
second straight undefeated America East title but will have
to settle for the No. 2 seed in the league playoffs which
begin this Wednesday.
Delaware, Hofstra, and Hartford (13-1, 4-1) all finished
in a three-way tie for first place with 4-1 records but
Hofstra receives the top seed due to the second conference
tie-breaker. Hofstra allowed just 13 goals in its games vs.
Delaware and Hartford while Delaware allowed 17 and Hartford
24.
The No. 2 seed Blue Hens will host No. 3 seed Hartford
next Wednesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium while
Hofstra will host No. 4 seed Towson in the other semifinal
game.
The championship game will be played at the site of the
highest remaining seed Saturday, May 6. The winner will earn
an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Hartford, the nations top scoring team, got three
goals from Frank Branca and two each from Tracey Kelusky and
Bryan Bendig to down the Hens for just the second time in
nine meetings. Delaware won last years game 25-5.
Delaware received two goals from freshman Ryan
Metzbower (St. Marys/Severna Park, MD) while
Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY)
added one goal and three assists and Jason Motta
(Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY) had one goal and one assist.
Laveys became just the 24th UD player to reach the
100-point mark and moved into 10th place on the UD all-time
assist list with 61.
Hartford led 2-0 to start the night and scored the first
four goals to go up 6-0 before the Hens got on the board on
a goal by Metzbower with 9:35 left in the first half. But
Hartford responded with another goal just 15 seconds later
and the Hawks took a 7-2 halftime lead.
The Hens scored the first three goals of the second half
to pull to within 7-5 but Hartfords Kelusky scored his
NCAA Division I-leading 60th goal of the season with 2:35
left in the third stanza to put the Hawks up 8-5. Delaware
never got closer.
