Loyola Shuts Down University of Delaware 14-3 in Men's Lacrosse Opener

NEWARK, DE -- Loyola scored the first four goals of the game and shut down the University of Delaware offense for 36 minutes at one span to post a 14-3 non-league men's lacrosse victory in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Loyola, a 1999 NCAA quarterfinalist after being ranked No. 1 for most of the season, won its 24th straight regular season game to set a new NCAA Division I record, breaking the mark of 23 set by Princeton in 1996-98. The Greyhounds (1-0) downed Delaware for the 15th straight time in the series.

The Blue Hens (0-1), who lost four All-Americans including 1999 national Player of the Year John Grant from last year's 14-3 squad that advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals, did not score until eight minutes into the game and were held scoreless for a span of 36 minutes from the first quarter until midway through the third stanza.

All-American Mike Battista (Newton North HS, Ma.) led the way for Loyola with three goals and an assist while Tim Goettleman (Manhasset, NY HS), Bobby Horsey (East/West Chester, PA), and Gavin Prout (Gannon/Whitley, Ontario) each scored twice and dished out an assists. Loyola starting goalkeeper Jason Born (Mt. St. Joseph's/Catonsville, MD) posted eight saves and allowed just two goals in three quarters of work.

Freshman Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) scored Delaware's first goal with 7:02 left in the first quarter to pull the Hens to within 4-1, but Loyola answered 10 seconds later and outscored the Hens 4-0 in the second stanza to take a 9-1 lead at intermission. The Hens added two second half goals as Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peeksill, NY) scored off a feed from Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) with 6:04 left in the third quarter and Motta fed Lavey for the final goal with 11:47 left to play to cut the lead to 12-3.

The Hens' three goals were their lowest output since a 20-2 season opening loss to Virginia in 1990. The loss was only Delaware's second in 10 games at Rullo Stadium.
