Blue Hens Knock St. Joseph's From Unbeaten Ranks

NEWARK, DE -- Chris Bickley, Ryan Metzbower, and Jason Lavey all scored three goals apiece as No. 17 ranked University of Delaware knocked St. Joseph's (Pa.) from the unbeaten ranks with a 20-7 non-league men's lacrosse victory Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.

The Blue Hens (4-3) who jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back, got goals from 13 different players on the way to their second straight win. The Hawks, off to their best start in school history, got two goals each from Randy McNeill and Chris Spay but fell to 6-1 on the season. The game was the first ever between the two schools in men's lacrosse.

Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) scored two of his three goals in the opening quarter and also added an assist while Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD), Delaware's leading goal scorer with 16, scored two of his three in the second stanza. Bickley (Abington/Jenkintown, PA) scored two of his career-high three goals in the third quarter and also added one assist.

Also for the Hens, Jason Motta (Lakeland-Panas/Peekskill, NY) added two goals and J.C. Valore (Moorestown, NJ HS) and Brad Downer (Annapolis, Md. HS) each had one goal and one assist.

Delaware played four goalkeepers during the game with starter David Mullen (Ridley, Pa. HS) posting 13 saves while allowing just three goals in 40 minutes of action. St. Joseph's outshot the Hens 41-38.

St. Joseph's, which had entered the game averaging 18.1 goals per game with an average win margin of 11.2 per game, could not keep their high-powered offense going. Delaware scored the first eight goals of the game before the Hawks got a goal from McNeill with 8:45 left in the first half.

The Hens took a 10-2 halftime lead and led 15-5 after the third quarter. Drew Scott, the Hawks' leading goal scorer with 21 entering the game, was held without a goal but did contribute three assists.
