NEWARK, DE -- Junior Jimmy
Vlahakis scored a game-high three goals, including the
game-winner with 10:51 left in the final quarter, to lead
Army to a 7-6 non-league men's lacrosse victory over host
University of Delaware Saturday night at Rullo
Stadium.
Vlahakis broke a 6-6 tie, the third
deadlock of the game, with his third goal to lift Army (4-3)
to its third straight victory and send Delaware (2-7) to its
fifth straight loss at home. Delaware was coming off a 14-9
win over St. Joseph's Wednesday that had snapped a five-game
losing streak overall.
Mike Kamon added two goals for the Black
Knights while Tim Pearson dished out three assists, reaching
80 for his career to tie the school record set by Tom
Sheckells in 1963-65. Army goalkeeper Dominik Nogic posted
15 saves, including several point blank stops in the second
half.
Matt Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna
Park, MD) led Delaware with two goals and an assist while
Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY)
added a goal and two assists, scoring at least one point for
the 36th straight game since 1999. Brad Downer
(Annapolis/Annapolis, MD) added a goal and one assist for
Delaware.
Delaware opened the scoring just eight
seconds into the contest as Keevin Galbraith
(Malvern/Paoli, PA) won the opening faceoff and scored for a
1-0 lead, the only goal of the opening half. The goal was
the fastest to start a game in Delaware history. Army tied
the score early in the second quarter but the Hens answered
with four straight goals, two by Lehmann, to go up 4-1 with
7:46 left in the half.
Army rallied to take a 5-4 lead into
halftime as the Black Knights scored the final four goals of
the half, two by Vlahakis. Army then upped the lead to 6-4
on a goal by Kamon 1:15 into the third quarter.
But Delaware came back to tie the score
at 6-6 as Lehmann fed Downer for an extra man goal with
11:32 left in the third quarter and Lavey scored off a feed
from Mike Thearle on a man-down situation just over three
minutes later. But Delaware would not score
again.
Army scored the only goal of the final
quarter when Vlahakis took a feed from Pearson and scored
past Delaware's Dave Mullen (nine saves). Delaware
had several chances to score in the final minutes but were
hurt by several turnovers and some big saves by
Nogic.
