NEWARK, DE -- Jason Lavey
(Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) scored three goals and
dished out an assist as the University of Delaware posted a
10-7 America East men's lacrosse victory over the University
of Hartford Saturday night at Rullo Stadium, clinching the
No. 3 seed in the upcoming league tournament.
Delaware, which had gone 2-2 in playing
four straight one-goal games, improved to 5-8, 3-2 on the
season and will be the No. 3 seed when the America East
semifinals begin May 2. The Hens will travel to No. 2 seed
Hofstra while top seed Towson will host either Hartford or
Vermont. The finals will be held May 5 at the site of the
higher seed with that winner earning an automatic berth into
the NCAA Tournament.
The Hawks, who have now lost six of their
last seven games, fell to 5-6, 1-3 and lost to the Blue Hens
for the ninth time in 11 all-time meetings.
Senior Dave Christopher
(Springfield, PA HS) and junior Chris Bickley
(Abington/Jenkintown, PA) each added two goals and freshman
Andrew Benazzi (Chaminade/Glen Cove, NY) added a goal
and an assist as the Blue Hens moved on for the win. Junior
goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley, PA HS) posted 12
saves and assisted on a goal in the third quarter when the
Blue Hens took control of the game.
Hartford got three goals from Kevin
Garvey while Tom Hanas and Brian LaMastro each added two
goals. Goalkeeper Rorke Greene stopped 17 shots.
The first half featured five ties, the
last with 56 seconds left in the second quarter when Bickley
tallied an unassisted goal for a 5-5 halftime
deadlock.
But the Hens took control in the third
quarter. Lavey scored from 40 yards out on an open net after
a pass from Mullen to give the Hens the lead for good at 6-5
with 12:48 left. Lavey scored 72 seconds later off a feed
from Benazzi and Benazzi added his first career goal with
6:41 left in the stanza for an 8-5 Blue Hen lead.
Lavey, one of 10 seniors making their
final home appearance at Rullo Stadium, extended his
point-scoring streak to 37 straight games since 1999 and
moved into eighth place on the all-time UD scoring list with
166 points on 74 goals and 92 assists. He moved past Jim
Bruder who had 163 points in 1996-99.
Delaware extended the lead to 10-5 on
fourth quarter goals by Christopher and Keevin Galbraith
before Hartford scored two goals in the final three
minutes.
The Blue Hens will close out their
regular season this Saturday, April 28 against the
University of Pennsylvania at Villanova
University.
