Early Penn State Flurry Sends Hens to Loss in Home Opener

Matt Alrich led Delaware with three goals

NEWARK, DE -- Will Driscoll and Mike Kern each scored three first half goals to stake Penn State to a 10-3 halftime lead the Nittany Lions moved on to a 13-6 non-league men's lacrosse opener over the University of Delaware Wednesday night, spoiling the home opener for the Blue Hens at Rullo Stadium.

Penn State (2-1), which won its second straight game, jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked in posting its first win over Delaware (1-3) since 1997. Driscoll (Fairport, NY HS) finished with a game-high four goals and two assists while Kern (Upper Arlington/Columbus, OH) finished with three goals.

Delaware, playing its home opener after three straight road games to start the season, had a seven-game home winning streak snapped and lost for just the fourth time in 20 all-time games at Rullo Stadium. Sophomore Matt Alrich (Calvert Hall/Timonium, MD) led the Blue Hens with three goals while Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) finished with a goal and an assist.

The win was one of the most lopsided in a series filled with close games. Each of the last four meetings and six of the last seven being decided by just one goal.

Penn State scored the first three goals of the game as Kern, Driscoll, and Ted Holmes (Germantown Academy/Flourtown, PA) each tallied for a 3-0 lead five minutes into the contest. The Hens scored two of the next three goals, but Driscoll ended the opening quarter with a goal for a 5-2 lead and the Nittany Lions scored the first four goals of the second quarter, two by Kern, to put the game away.

The closest Delaware would get from there was at 12-6 on a goal by Chris Bickley (Abington/Jenkintwon, PA) with 2:23 left in the third quarter. Driscoll scored the lone goal for either team in the final stanza.

Penn State outshot the Hens 44-37 and goalkeeper Matt Vallone (East/Corning, NY) was outstanding, posting 14 saves on the night. Delaware's Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) posted nine saves. Penn State committed 15 penalties for 12:30 minutes but the Hens could convert on just 3 of 11 extra man tries.

Delaware will host No. 15 North Carolina Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium while Penn State will travel to No. 4 Georgetown Saturday afternoon.
