PRINCETON, NJ -- Keith Cromwell
scored three goals and dished out four assists and Mike
McLaughlin added three goals and three assists as Rutgers
University led from start to finish to post a 13-8
non-league men's lacrosse victory over the University of
Delaware Saturday afternoon at Princeton University's Class
of 1952 Field.
The game was part of a doubleheader that
followed host Princeton's 8-4 victory over Johns
Hopkins.
Rutgers, 2-0 under new head coach Bill
Dirrigl and ranked No. 23 in the latest Inside Lacrosse Top
25 poll, jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead and never
looked back in posting its first victory over the Blue Hens
since 1997 after three straight losses.
Scott Massey and Jeff Duca each scored
two goals with Massey adding an assist in the balanced
effort.
Delaware, ranked No. 17 by Inside
Lacrosse, fell to 1-2 on the season despite two goals from
junior Scott Rickli (Clarkstown South/Bardonia, NY)
and three assists from Jason Lavey
(Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY). Dave
Christopher (Springfield, PA HS) and Chris Bickley
(Abington/Jenkintown, PA) each added one goal and one
assist for the Blue Hens. Dave Mullen (Ridley, PA HS)
posted 11 saves in goal.
Delaware outshot Rutgers 40-30 but
Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Dan Shaivitz stopped 21 shots to
keep Rutgers on top. The Scarlet Knights scored on three of
eight extra man situations while holding Delaware scoreless
in five tries.
The Blue Hens cut the Rutgers lead to 5-4
at halftime, but the Scarlet Knights came out strong again
in the second half, outscoring Delaware 3-1 in the stanza
and tacking on five more goals in the final 15
minutes.
Delaware will host Penn State this
Wednesday while Rutgers returns to action at home vs. Notre
Dame this Friday.
