Scarlet Knights Lead from Start to Finish in Victory

Transfer Scott Rickli scored two goals for the Hens

PRINCETON, NJ -- Keith Cromwell scored three goals and dished out four assists and Mike McLaughlin added three goals and three assists as Rutgers University led from start to finish to post a 13-8 non-league men's lacrosse victory over the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Princeton University's Class of 1952 Field.

The game was part of a doubleheader that followed host Princeton's 8-4 victory over Johns Hopkins.

Rutgers, 2-0 under new head coach Bill Dirrigl and ranked No. 23 in the latest Inside Lacrosse Top 25 poll, jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead and never looked back in posting its first victory over the Blue Hens since 1997 after three straight losses.

Scott Massey and Jeff Duca each scored two goals with Massey adding an assist in the balanced effort.

Delaware, ranked No. 17 by Inside Lacrosse, fell to 1-2 on the season despite two goals from junior Scott Rickli (Clarkstown South/Bardonia, NY) and three assists from Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY). Dave Christopher (Springfield, PA HS) and Chris Bickley (Abington/Jenkintown, PA) each added one goal and one assist for the Blue Hens. Dave Mullen (Ridley, PA HS) posted 11 saves in goal.

Delaware outshot Rutgers 40-30 but Scarlet Knight goalkeeper Dan Shaivitz stopped 21 shots to keep Rutgers on top. The Scarlet Knights scored on three of eight extra man situations while holding Delaware scoreless in five tries.

The Blue Hens cut the Rutgers lead to 5-4 at halftime, but the Scarlet Knights came out strong again in the second half, outscoring Delaware 3-1 in the stanza and tacking on five more goals in the final 15 minutes.

Delaware will host Penn State this Wednesday while Rutgers returns to action at home vs. Notre Dame this Friday.
