Hens' Late Rally Falls Short in America East Opener

Jason Lavey Scored Two Goals and Had Three Assists

NEWARK, DE -- Kyle Campbell scored four goals and Brad Reppert scored once and dished out five assists as No. 17 ranked Towson broke open a close game then had to hold on to post a 10-7 America East men's lacrosse victory over the University of Delaware Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.

The game was the America East conference opener for both teams. Towson (4-2, 1-0) won its second straight game while the Blue Hens (1-6, 0-1) lost their fifth straight. Towson downed the Blue Hens for the first time since 1998. Five of the last six meetings have been decided by three goals or less.

Delaware senior Jason Lavey (Harborfields/Huntington Station, NY) ed the Blue Hens with two goals and three assists, scoring a point for the 34th straight game, while Dave Christopher (Springfield, PA HS) added two assists. Delaware was outshot 53-25 with Blue Hen goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park, PA) coming up big consistently with 24 saves.

The teams played to a scoreless first quarter and went into halftime tied at 3-3 as Campbell scored two second quarter goals for Towson and Brad Downer, R.C. Reed, and Matt Alrich tallied for Delaware.

The Tigers appeared to pull away in the third quarter as they scored the first three goals of the period, the last by Josh Tankersley that put Towson up 6-3 with 2:07 left. Delaware's Matt Lehmann scored off a feed from Lavey with 21 seconds left in the stanza to cut the lead to 6-4 heading into the final quarter.

Campbell and Alex Fountain sandwiched goals around one by Lavey to give Towson an 8-5 lead with 5:06 left to play. Delaware put in a furious rally, cutting the lead to 8-7 as Chris Bickley scored off a pass from Lavey with 1:05 left and Lavey scored himself just 12 seconds later.

But Towson put a stop to the comeback as Brad Monaco scored into an open net with 22 seconds left and Campbell capped a big night with a score with just three seconds left.

Delaware will travel to St. Joseph's March 28 and return home next Saturday to host Army.
