Third Quarter Flurry by Loyola Ruins Blue Hens' Opener

Ryan Metzbower scored four goals in his first action in over a year

NEWARK, DE -- Loyola scored three goals in a span of 36 seconds late in the third quarter to snap a 7-7 tie and move on to a 17-12 Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse victory in both team's season opener Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Delaware, playing its first game as a new member of the CAA, had just tied the score at 7-7 with 8:54 left to play in the third quarter before Loyola struck with two goals by Stephen Brundage and one by Michael Sullivan in just 36 seconds to up the lead to 10-7. The Greyhounds continued the run with four more goals, including three by Jim Fink, to put the game away.

Loyola defeated the Blue Hens on opening day for the third straight year, continuing streaks of 19 straight season opening wins and 17 straight wins over Delaware. The Hens' last win in the series came in 1972.

The loss spoiled an outstanding offensive display by Delaware, which scored seven extra man goals in nine attempts. The Blue Hens got four goals from sophomore midfielder Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD), three goals and four assists from freshman Andy Hipple (Moorestown, NJ HS) in his collegiate debut, and three goals and an assist from co-captain Brad Downer (Annapolis, MD HS. Delaware's 12 goals were the most in a losing cause since a 14-12 setback to North Carolina 1998.

Loyola, coming off its 14th straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001 and ranked No. 8 in the pre-season Lacrosse Magazine Top 25 poll, got a team-high four goals from Fink while Sullivan added three goals and an assist, Chris Summers scored twice and handed out two assists, Brundage tallied two goals and one assist, and Joey Case scored twice. Nine different Loyola players scored at least one goal as the Greyhounds held a 49-30 advantage in shots.

Delaware, ranked No. 25 in the pre-season Lacrosse Magazine poll, fell behind 3-1 but came back to tie the game three more times, the last with 8:54 left in the third quarter when Metzbower, a pre-season All-American who missed all of last season with a knee injury, tallied off a feed from Hipple to knot the score at 7-7. It was all Loyola after that as the Greyhounds led 17-8 before the Blue Hens scored the final four goals of the game.

The game marked the 400th coaching appearance for UD head coach Bob Shillinglaw, who is now 210-190 in his 26th season as a head coach.
