Blue Hens

COLLEGE PARK, MD - No. 5 ranked
University of Maryland held the University of Delaware's top
scorer without a goal and the Terrapins rolled to a 16-5
non-league men's lacrosse win over the Blue Hens Saturday at
Byrd Stadium.
Maryland (5-1), which downed the Hens for
the third straight year, jumped out to an 8-1 halftime lead
and never looked back in posting its third straight victory.
The Blue Hens (2-3) dropped their second straight game as
they suffered their lowest scoring output since a 5-4 win
over Vermont last April.
Maryland, the nation's top scoring
offense, got goals from nine different players led by junior
Matt Brock's first career hat trick. Dan LaMonica, Mike
Mollot, Nate Watkins, Mike LaMonica, and Ryan Moran each
added two goals apiece.
Delaware got two goals each from
sophomore Scott Evans (St. Peter's/Peterborough,
Ontario) and senior Chris Bickley
(Abington/Jenkintown, PA), but leading scorer Ryan
Metzbower (12 goals) was held to just one assist. Second
leading scorer Andy Hipple was held to one goal and
one assist. Evans also added an assist for the Blue Hens.
Delaware goalkeeper Dave Mullen (Ridley/Ridley Park,
PA) posted 19 saves.
Maryland, which scored four goals in each
quarter, outshot the Hens 46-34 and won 16 of the 25
faceoffs.
The Terrapins broke a scoreless tie with
6:13 left in the first quarter when Dan LaMonica scored the
game's first goal. That began a 6-0 start for Maryland,
including two goals each by LaMonica and Mollot, as the Hens
could not get on the board until Bickley scored off a feed
from Metzbower with 10:41 left before halftime. Maryland
scored twice more to take an 8-1 lead into
halftime.
Delaware scored two of the first three
goals of the second half as Bickley and Evans each converted
in the first four minutes to cut the lead to 10-3. But
Maryland struck back with six straight goals to put the game
away. The Hens got goals from Evans and Hipple in the final
two minutes for the final verdict.
The Hens will continue their tough
three-game road swing next Saturday as they travel to No. 9
ranked Towson for a Colonial Athletic Association game.
