March 30, 2002 Smith Scores Six Goals as Ohio State Shoots Past Blue Hens
NEWARK, DE -- Junior Curtis Smith (Oak Bay/Victoria, British Columbia) scored six goals and dished out an assist and sophomore Anthony Gilardi (Baldwin/Baldwin, NY) added four goals to lead No. 17 ranked Ohio State to a 15-7 non-league men's lacrosse victory over the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. The Buckeyes (6-2), the nation's eighth leading scoring team with 11.83 goals per game, jumped out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back as they won their sixth straight game after an 0-2 start. The Blue Hens, whose 10 starters, including eight freshmen, all made their first career starts for UD, dropped their fourth straight game, all to Top 20 opponents, to fall to 2-5 on the season. Ohio State held just a 38-34 advantage on shots on goals but took advantage of their opportunities throughout the game. Freshman Andy Hipple (Moorestown/Moorestown, NJ) led Delaware with three goals and an assist while R.C. Reed (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) scored twice, and Brad Downer (Annapolis/Annapolis, MD) and Sean Dunn (Worthington/Worthington, OH) each tallied one goal. Matt Lehmann (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) also dished out two assists for the Blue Hens. Delaware, which was playing its first home game since March 5, continues action April 3 at No. 18 Penn State. The Nittany Lions will be the Hens' fifth straight ranked opponent. The Blue Hens, who had been outscored in the first half by a combined 25-5 during its previous three losses, got off to another slow start and could never recover. The Buckeyes got on the board just three minutes and 27 second into the contest on a goal by Pat Myers and led 3-0 after the first quarter as Gilardi scored twice. Ohio State built the lead to 5-0 before Delaware got on the board on a goal by Reed with 10:08 left before halftime. However, OSU scored the final three goals of the stanza, including scores from Smith and Gilardi, to take the 8-1 halftime advantage. Smith scored three goals in the first five minutes of third quarter as Ohio State put together a 4-0 run to start the half and up the lead to 12-1. The Hens fought back and scored three of the next four goals, including two by Hipple, to cut the margin to 13-4. Ohio State got goals by Myers and and Smith in the final 18 seconds of the stanza to take a 15-4 lead into the final quarter. Delaware outscored Ohio State 3-0 in the final quarter as Downer, Dunn, and Hipple all scored in the final 2:28 of the game. AGATE: #17 Ohio
