Campbell Nets Six Goals as Tigers Overpower Hens in CAA Play

Delaware goalkeeper Dave Mullen had 20 saves

TOWSON, MD - The University of Delaware suffered from another slow start and dropped an 18-4 decision to No. 10 ranked Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse game Saturday at Minnegan Stadium.

Towson junior attackman Kyle Campbell scored six goals and added an assist, Brad Reppert scored three goals and assisted on three others, and Brian Myers chipped in with three goals as the Tigers (3-2, 1-0 CAA) snapped a two-game losing streak.

The Blue Hens, who trailed 8-1 at halftime in each of their last two outings, fell behind 9-3 at the break Saturday vs. Towson and could never recover. Delaware dropped its third straight game to fall to 2-4, 0-2 CAA. Chris Bickley led the Blue Hens with two goals while Ryan Metzbower and Matt Lehmann each added a tally.

Towson outshot the Blue Hens 62-18 and held a 20-6 advantage on faceoffs. Delaware senior goalkeeper Dave Mullen posted 20 saves in suffering the loss. The Tigers downed the Hens for the second straight but the margin of defeat was uncharacteristic of this rivalry, which has seen five of the previous six meetings decided by three goals or fewer. The 14-goal margin was the highest in the history of the 39-game series.

The Tigers outshot the Hens 16-3 in the opening quarter on their way to a 4-0 lead, but didn't score until the 8:45 mark when Campbell scored his first goal.

Delaware finally got on the board early in the second quarter when Bickley connected just 1:18 into the stanza to cut the margin to 4-1, but the Tigers came right back with four straight goals to up the lead back to 8-1. Bickley tallied again with 4:44 left in the half and Metzbower scored his team-high 13th goal of the year with 1:21 remaining to cut the lead to 9-3 at the half.

But Towson put the game away in the third quarter as the Tigers scored five straight, two by Campbell, to increase the lead to 14-3 with 5:32 left in the stanza.

The Blue Hens, who have played three straight Top 10 teams on the road, will return home for the first time since March 5 when they host Ohio State Mar. 30 at Rullo Stadium.
