First Quarter Rutgers Flurry Downs Blue Hens

Andy Hipple scored two goals for the Hens

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Matthew Apel scored all three of his goals in the first quarter as host Rutgers scored six times on eight shots in the opening period and moved on to an 11-6 non-league men’s lacrosse victory over the University of Delaware Saturday at the Rutgers Turf Field.

The Blue Hens, who got two goals from Andy Hipple and a goal and assist from Xander Ritz, outshot the Scarlet Knights 36-32 but could never catch up in losing its second straight game to fall to 1-2 on the season. The Hens also outshot their opponent last week in a 9-6 setback to Loyola.

Apel was one of four Rutgers players with multiple goal games as Delby Powless scored twice and dished out an assist and Nick Schmidt and Tim White each contributed two scores for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers, which also got 12 saves in goal from Greg Havalchak, improved to 3-0 on the season, already surpassing last year’s win total when the team posted a 2-12 record.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Delaware’s Rullo Stadium but the field was unplayable due to last week’s snowstorm. Saturday’s game was played under light snow showers.

The Scarlet Knights scored all the goals they needed in the first half. Delaware opened the scoring on a goal by Hipple two minutes and 35 seconds into the contest but would be held scoreless until early in the second stanza. Rutgers took advantage as it scored each of the next six goals of the game, including three by Apel, to take a 6-1 lead.

Delaware’s Bob Meunier ended the streak with a goal two minutes into the second period, but the Scarlet Knights answered on a man-up goal by Powless three minutes later as Rutgers took a 7-2 lead into halftime.

The Hens once again enjoyed success early in a quarter as they opened up the third period with Ritz and Matt Alrich scoring consecutive goals in the first two minutes to cut the lead to 7-4. But that was as close as they would get as Powless and Schmidt scored near the end of the stanza to up the RU lead back to five at 9-4.

Next up for Delaware will be a March 5 contest vs. Mt. St. Mary’s at Loyola’s Curley Field in Baltimore.
