NEWARK, DE - Phil Grillo scored
three goals and dished out two assists and Scott Steele
netted three goals and assisted on one other in a return to
his home state as No. 10 ranked UMBC defeated the University
of Delaware 13-8 in a non-league men's lacrosse game
Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.
The game drew a crowd of approximately
1,000 as part of the annual Delaware Lacrosse Foundation
Youth Day. The game was also the annual Milt Roberts Day
game in honor of the late Milt Roberts, who co-founded the
men's lacrosse program at the University of Delaware and is
a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Steele, the UMBC co-captain and a native
of Rehoboth Beach, DE (Cape Henlopen High School), was named
the game's Most Valuable Player as part of Milt Robert Day
festivities.
Delaware junior Matt Alrich scored
a team-high three goals to up his team and Colonial Athletic
Association leading total to 30 while Ryan Metzbower
netted two goals and Xander Ritz scored once and
assisted on another. Alrich has scored a goal in all 13
games this season.
UMBC, which is fighting for an NCAA
Tournament berth, also got two goals from Franklin Berry and
17 saves from Tim Flanagan and improved to 7-4. Delaware
suffered its third straight loss to fall to 5-8 on the
season with all eight losses coming by five goals or less.
The game marked the first meeting between the two schools
since Delaware posted a 12-11 overtime win in the 1999 NCAA
quarterfinals.
The Retrievers took control of the game
early and never looked back in posting the victory. UMBC got
first quarter goals from Berry, Pat Muston, and Rob Cross
and led 5-0 midway through second quarter before the Hens
got on the board on a goal by Alrich with 6:13 left before
halftime. Berry and Steele followed with goals for UMBC for
a 7-2 lead at intermission.
UMBC scored four of the first five goals
of the second half, the last a man-up goal by Steele with
6:35 left in the third quarter for an 11-4 lead. Delaware
made a late rally in the fourth quarter as Metzbower scored
the first two goals of final stanza to cut the lead to five,
but UMBC answered with two goals of its own by Grillo and
Steele to put the game away.
Delaware will continue action this
Wednesday, April 23 when the Hens travel to Drexel for a
Colonial Athletic Association game at 4 p.m.
