Delaware 10, Albany 7 March 13, 2004 Howard, Alrich Combine for Seven Goals in Blue Hen Win Boxscore NEWARK, DE -- Freshman Cam Howard and senior Matt Alrich combined for seven goals and Chris Collins stopped 17 shots as the University of Delaware won its second straight game by downing Albany 10-7 in a non-league men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. The Hens improved to 5-1 on the season and remained perfect in three home contests at Rullo as Howard scored a career-high four goals and dished out two assists and Alrich added three goals and an assist. Alrich, who leads the team with 14 goals on the season, has now scored at least one goal in 21 straight games and notched his 11th career hat trick. Ryan Metzbower, Andy Hipple, and Kurt Nordhoff each added a goal for the Blue Hens, who held advantages of 43-32 in shots, 39-31 in groundballs, and 12-9 on faceoffs. The win moved Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw to within one win of earning his 200th career victory with the Blue Hens. Albany, whose head coach is former Blue Hen assistant Scott Marr, fell to 1-2 on the season despite three goals from Merrick Thomson. Frank Resetarits added two goals and two assists and Chris Martocchia added two goals and one assist. The Great Danes, who were coming off a 17-6 loss at top-ranked Johns Hopkins Tuesday, captured the America East title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Delaware, which has already matched its win total from 2003 when the Hens went 5-10, also avenged a 16-12 loss to Albany in the first-ever meeting between the two teams last season at Rullo Stadium. The Blue Hens scored three of the first four goals of the game to go up 3-1 before Albany came back to tie it up at 3-3 on two consecutive goals by Resetarits, the second with just one second left in the opening stanza. Alrich and Metzbower scored to open the second quarter but Albany came back to tie the game again, this time at 5-5, on goals by Martocchia and Thomson. But Delaware broke the tie and took a 6-5 lead into intermission when Howard grabbed a loose ball and grounded a shot past Albany goalkeeper Kevin Rae (15 saves) with just 30 seconds left before halftime. Howard helped the Hens go up 8-5 in the third quarter as he fed Alrich for a goal five minutes into the period and followed with an unassisted goal of his own with 4:01 left in the stanza. Albany rallied once again, cutting the lead to 8-7 on a goal by Thomson with 5:21 left to play, but Howard struck again, feeding Alrich for a goal with 4:14 left and and scoring himself with 3:20 remaining to give the Hens some breathing room. Delaware continues action Wednesday when the Hens travel to No. 6 ranked Georgetown.
