Delaware 15, #16 Denver 9 May 1, 2004 Alrich's Career-High Five Goals Lead Blue Hens Boxscore NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware senior Matt Alrich (right) celebrated Senior Night with an outstanding performance as he netted four of his career-high five goals in the second half to break open a close game, added an assist, and notched his 100th career point as the Blue Hens knocked off No. 16 ranked University of Denver 15-9 in non-league men's lacrosse action Saturday night at Rullo Stadium. Alrich, an attackman from Timonium, MD (Calvert Hall), was named the Milt Robert Game Most Valuable Player for his efforts. He upped his season total to a team leading 32 goals and became just the 26th player in UD history to reach 100 career points on 81 goals and 19 assists. He also recorded the 14th hat trick of his career. The Blue Hens, who won their second straight game, improved to 10-5 on the season and reached the 10-win mark for the eighth time in school history and for the first time since the 2000 season. Denver, which opened the season with a win over defending national champion University of Virginia, lost its second straight game to fall to 8-5. The Blue Hens posted their third win over a top 20 team this season. Delaware will continue action next Wednesday, May 5, when the Hens travel to Villanova for the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals at 7:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium. A win would put the Hens into the CAA title game March 8. In addition to Alrich, Joe Trentzsch (Fallston/Fallston,MD) scored a season-high three goals, Jordan Hall (Fleetwood Park/Surrey, British Columbia) scored twice and dished out an assist, Cam Howard (Tatnall/Wilmington, DE) added a goal and two assists, and Ryan Metzbower (St. Mary's/Severna Park, MD) chipped in with one goal and one assist. Freshman Alex Smith (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) also scored a goal and won 20 of his 27 faceoffs. The Hens outshot Denver by a 50-33 margin. The Pioneers got two goals and an assist from Greer Hanlon, Erik Swanson scored twice, Greg Weigel added a goal and two assists, and goalkeeper Brian Sanders recorded 16 saves. Denver jumped out to a 2-0 lead as the Pioneers held Delaware scoreless for the first quarter before Trentzsch got the Hens on the board just 44 seconds into the second stanza. That goal was part of a five-goal run by the Blue Hens that put them up 5-2 and vaulted them to a 6-4 lead at halftime. The Pioneers cut the lead to 7-5 early in the third quarter on a goal by Swanson with 12:02 left, but Smith started a three-goal run by the Hens that was followed by two goals by Alrich to put the lead back up to 10-5. Denver cut the lead to three at 10-7 with 3:40 left on a goal by Weigel and again at 11-8 on Matt Brown's only score of the game with just five seconds left in the third stanza. But the Hens put the game away in the final quarter as Trentzsch and Andy Hipple scored in the first two and a half minutes of the final stanza to push the lead to 13-8 and Alrich added some insurance with two goals in the final seven minutes.
