Drexel 9, #17 Delaware 8 April 17, 2004 Blue Hens Drop Heartbreaker as Dragons Rally in Final Minutes Boxscore NEWARK, DE -- Mike Filippone tied the game with 1:42 left to play then fed Matt Musci for the game-winner with 59 seconds remaining as Drexel completed the comeback for a 9-8 upset win over No. 17 University of Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse action Saturday night at Rullo Stadium. The Blue Hens (8-5, 1-3 CAA), whose hopes of a post-season berth in the CAA semifinals narrowed with the loss, never held the lead until the 4:18 mark when Cam Howard (right) scored the Hens' third straight goal to give Delaware an 8-7 lead. The loss was the third straight for the Blue Hens, all in CAA action, and was the third straight time they have been defeated by the Dragons. Andy Hipple led the Hens with three goals while Bob Meunier and Joe Trentzsch each scored twice. Meunier scored his two goals five minutes apart in the final quarter with his second goal tying the game at 7-7 with 7:11 left to play. The tie marked the first time the Hens had held a share of the lead since a 3-3 tie midway through the second period. Ryan Metzbower added two assists for the Hens and became just the 25th player in school history to surpass the 100 career point plateau. Filippone, Musci, and Pat Simpson each scored twice for Drexel (4-7, 1-3 CAA), which had suffered four one-goal losses earlier in the season. The win was the first ever over a top 20 opponent for Drexel in five seasons under head coach Chris Bates. Neither team led by more than two goals the entire the game and final statistics were near even. Delaware outshot Drexel 34-30 while Drexel held a 32-30 advantage in groundballs and won 11 of the 20 faceoffs. Drexel goalkeeper Ryan Harney stopped 10 shots while Delaware netminder Chris Collins posted nine saves. Drexel jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three minutes but the Hens came back to tie the score at 2-2 early in the second quarter on goals by Hipple and Trentzsch and later took their first lead at 3-2 on a goal by Hipple off a feed from Meunier. Drexel got goals from Sean Moloney and Musci in the final seven minutes of the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. The teams traded goals in the third quarter with the Dragons taking the biggest lead of the game at 7-5 with 2:27 left in the third quarter on a goal by Simpson. But Delaware came roaring back in the final quarter as Meunier scored three minutes into the final quarter to cut the lead to 7-6 and tied the game at 7-7 just over five minutes later when he scored on a man-down situation, the CAA-leading third man-down goal by the Hens this season. The Hens tacked on their third straight goal when Howard tallied with 4:18 left, giving the Hens the 8-7 advantage. But Drexel rallied back, tying the game at 8-8 with 1:42 left when Collins was caught out of the net and Filippone took a feed from Joe Fiore and scored into the open net. The Dragons clinched the win with just 59 second remaining when Filippone found Musci for the game-winner. Delaware had one more chance to tie the game, but Harney stopped a shot by Meunier with 39 seconds left and Matt Alrich and Howard were both wide on shots in the final 13 seconds.
