Delaware 5, Lehigh 3 February 21, 2004 Alrich Scores Twice in Second Half as Hens Win Defensive Struggle Boxscore BETHLEHEM, PA - Senior attackman Matt Alrich (Timonium/Timonium, MD) scored the game's only two second half goals, both off feeds from freshman Cam Howard (Tatnall/Wilmington, DE), and added assisted on two other scores in the first half, as the University of Delaware survived a defensive struggle and defeated host Lehigh 5-3 Saturday in a non-league men's lacrosse game. Delaware, which opened the season with an 8-7 win over Saint Joseph's last Saturday, improved to 2-0 with the victory while Lehigh (0-1) fell in its season opener. The Hens are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since the 1999 squad opened up 8-0 on the way to an NCAA quarterfinal playoff appearance. Alrich, who also scored two goals vs. Saint Joseph's, broke a 3-3 tie when he scored off a feed from Howard just two minutes into the second half and then gave the Hens some insurance just four minutes into the final quarter with another score off a Howard assist to lead the Hens. The three goals allowed was the lowest by the Hens since downing Vermont 10-3 on Apr. 23, 2000. Delaware pummeled Lehigh goalkeeper Tom Ellis (20 saves) with 49 shots on goal while the Mountain Hawks could manage just 16 against the Blue Hens and goalkeeper Chris Collins (Lakeland-Panas/Yorktown Heights, NY). Collins, who has not allowed a fourth quarter goal this season, posted seven saves for the win. The Hens also used a 10-2 advantage in faceoffs for the win. Lehigh, a Patriot League contender, jumped out to a 3-1 lead as Andrew Lucas scored just four minutes into the game and Greg Morin tallied a goal just 67 seconds later. Delaware's Ryan Overs (Lynbrook/Lynbrook, NY) finally got the Hens on the board on a goal off an Alrich assist with 3:32 left in the first quarter, but the Mountain Hawks came right back as Morin scored his second goal with 8:24 left before the half. But that was all the Hens would allow for the rest of the afternoon. Howard, an All-State player at nearby Tatnall School who was making his collegiate debut after missing the opener with an injury, scored his first career goal with 6:30 left in the half to cut the lead to 5-4 and the Hens tied it less than five minutes later when Overs scored off a feed from Alrich with 1:40 left in the opening half. Delaware and Lehigh, two former East Coast Conference foes, met for the first time since 1990. Delaware downed the Mountain Hawks for the 20th straight time since 1971 and improved to 30-13 all-time in the series. The Blue Hens return to action next Saturday, Feb. 28, for their home opener when they take on Stony Brook at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium.
