#8 Rutgers 12, Delaware 4 March 6, 2004 Rutgers Goes Up Early, Hands Hens First Loss of Season Boxscore PISCATAWAY, NJ - The University of Delaware men's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon as No. 8 ranked Rutgers University jumped out to a 7-2 halftime lead and never looked back on the way to a 12-4 victory. The Blue Hens (3-1), who opened the season with consecutive wins over Saint Joseph's, Lehigh, and Stony Brook, were off to their best start since 1999 when the Hens started out 8-0 on the way an NCAA quarterfinal berth. Rutgers improved to 2-0 on the season as the Scarlet Knights had 10 different players score at least one goal. Colin Checcio scored two goals and dished out an assist, Tim White scored twice, and Chris Doctor had one goal and dished out three assists. Delaware, which entered the game averaging just 8.0 goals per game, was outshot by a slim 30-26 margin and did hold a 30-26 margin in groundballs but struggled putting the ball in the net. Rutgers goalkeeper Greg Havalchak allowed just two goals and stopped 14 Blue Hen shots. Delaware's leading scorer, senior Matt Alrich, scored two goals and extended his team-lead to 10 goals on the seasons. He also scored for the 19th straight game. Freshman Cam Howard added a goal and an assist and Ryan Metzbower also scored a goal for the Hens. Freshman Alex Smith, who entered the game having won 82 percent of his faceoffs, was outstanding again, winning 9 of 17 draws. Rutgers scored two goals in the first three minutes to go up 2-0, but the Hens struck back and cut the lead to 2-1 on Metzbower's third goal of the year with 11:20 remaining in the opening quarter. But the Scarlet Knights responded by three straight goals, including two man-up goals by Checcio, to go up 5-1. Alrich cut the lead to 5-2 with his first goal with 9:46 left in the first half, but Rutgers scored the last two goals of the first half to take a 7-2 lead into intermission and scored the first five goals of the second half as part of a seven-goal run to put the game away. Delaware scored two goals in the final two minutes.
