April 23, 2004 Blue Hens Clinch CAA Playoff Berth with Win FAIRFIELD, CT -- Junior Andy Hipple scored four goals and senior Matt Alrich tallied twice as the University of Delaware men's lacrosse team clinched a spot in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association playoffs with a 13-8 win over Sacred Heart in CAA action Saturday afternoon. The win marks the first ever for Delaware in three tries against Sacred Heart and also snaps a three-game conference losing skid. The Blue Hens improved to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the CAA with the victory in head coach Bob Shillinglaw's 400th career game while the Pioneers fell to 1-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference. Delaware's win, coupled with Towson's win over Drexel and Villanova's win over Hofstra Saturday night clinched a spot in the CAA playoffs for the Blue Hens. Delaware earned the No. 3 seed and will travel to No. 2 Villanova May 5 for a semifinal game. No. 1 Towson will host No. 4 Hofstra in the other semifinal game. Hipple opened the scoring at the 11:06 mark, scoring unassisted to give Delaware a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart reeled off three unanswered goals from Matthew Robideau, Jonathan Corto and Peter Greco to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. The Blue Hens scored all four goals in the second period and opened the second half with two more to build a 7-3 lead. Hipple scored at 13:55 of the second quarter and 14:07 of the third to spark the offense while junior Joe Trentzsch, Alrich, freshman Alex Smith and junior Bob Meunier also tallied during the Delaware run. Consecutive goals by Robideau and Jorge Bravo helped the Pioneers cut the Blue Hen lead to 7-5. Hipple answered back with a goal at 4:05 of the third quarter and both sophomore Kurt Norfhoff and senior Ryan Metzbower scored to build the lead back to 10-5. Freshman Cam Howard and Jordan Hall, along with Alrich, followed a tally by Christian Lynch of Sacred Heart to give Delaware a 13-6 lead with 6:20 to go in the game. Delaware outshot the Pioneers 40-34 despite turning the ball over 23 times to Sacred Heart's 18. Senior goalkeeper Chris Collins stopped 11 Pioneer shots as he earned his ninth win of the season for Delaware while Sacred Heart netminder Thomas Hind also made 11 saves.
