Delaware 8, Saint Joseph's 7 February 14, 2004 Blue Hens Rally with Big Third Quarter to Win Season Opener   Boxscore PHILADELPHIA -- Junior midfielder Joe Trentzsch (Fallston/Fallston, MD) scored the game's only fourth quarter goal with 8:49 left to play to break a 7-7 tie and lead the University of Delaware to an 8-7 comeback victory over host Saint Joseph's in the men's lacrosse season opener for both teams Saturday evening at Finnesey Field. The game was the nation's first collegiate men's lacrosse game played this spring. Delaware (1-0) will continue action next Saturday at Lehigh while Saint Joseph's (0-1) will next play Feb. 28 at Colgate. Trentzsch, a first-year transfer from Essex Community College where he was the national Junior College Player of the Year last spring, didn't waste any time giving the Blue Hens a lift. He also scored a goal and dished out an assist in the third quarter. Senior Matt Alrich (Calvert Hall/Timonium, MD - at right), last year's team leader in goals with 35, also scored two goals and dished out an assist and senior Ryan Overs (Lynbrook/Lynbrook, NY) contributed a goal and an assist for the Hens. Alex McColough and Mike Pagliaro each scored two goals for Saint Joseph's with McColough also adding an assist. The Hens, coming off three straight losing seasons for the first time in school history, including a 5-10 mark in 2003, have now defeated the Hawks in all four all-time meetings. Delaware had to rally to capture the win as the Blue Hens fell behind 5-2 at halftime and needed five third quarter goals to get back into the game. The Hens outshot Saint Joseph's 38-30 but Hawks goalkeeper Dan Morrissey came up big with 28 saves. Delaware junior Chris Collins (Lakeland Panas/Yorktown, NY) picked up the win in goal for the Hens with eight saves. After the Hawks jumped out to the 5-2 halftime lead, Delaware dominated the third quarter. The Hawks built the lead to 6-2 with a goal less than two minutes into the second half but the Hens answered at the 11:38 mark as Trentzsch scored his first goal. The Hawks then went up 7-3 on a goal by Ryan Madairy with 9:11 left in the stanza but that would be the end of the Hawk scoring for the night. Delaware followed with its pivotal run as freshman Alex Smith (Boy's Latin/Timonium, MD) scored just nine seconds after Madairy's goal, Overs followed with a goal five minutes later, junior Andy Hipple (Moorestown/Moorestown, NJ) scored with 2:50 left in the stanza, and Alrich tied the game at 7-7 off a feed from Overs with 1:03 left in the stanza. Neither team scored again until the game-winner.
