Blue Hens Rally, Win on Late Goal by Overs

Boxscore

BALTIMORE, MD - Ryan Overs (Lynbrook/Lynbrook, NY) scored the game-winning goal with 2:04 left to play as the University of Delaware completed the comeback and downed host UMBC 11-10 in a battle of top 20 men's lacrosse teams Saturday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

No. 20 ranked Delaware, playing its first game as a ranked team for the first time since the 2000 season, rallied from an 8-4 halftime deficit to down the No. 14 ranked Retrievers for its second straight win over a top 20 team.

The Hens (7-2) won their second straight game and their fourth in the last five outings as Matt Alrich scored a game-high four goals, Overs added two goals and two assists, and Cam Howard added a goal and three assists.

Goalkeeper Chris Collins posted 12 saves. Freshman Alex Smith added an assist and played a key role in the win as he won 17 of 25 faceoffs against UMBC's Pat Muston, who entered the game ranked second nationally in faceoff percentage.

UMBC (2-3) got four goals from Brendan Mundorf while Drew Westervelt added two goals and two assists and goalkeeper Kevin Cepelak posted eight saves.

Delaware, which overcame eight penalties while UMBC had none, evened the all-time series vs. UMBC at 9-9 with nine of the games being decided by two goals or less.

Alrich scored the first goal of the game just 54 seconds into the contest but UMBC answered with five straight goals, including three by Mundorf, to take control. The Retrievers later scored three straight goals to go up 8-3 before a goal by Delaware's Andy Hipple cut the lead to 8-4 at intermission.

Delaware continued the momentum in the second half as the Hens scored the first four goals of the half, including two by Alrich, to pull to within 8-7 with 8:09 left in the third stanza, but UMBC upped the lead back to two on a goal by Westervelt just nine seconds later. The Hens finally tied the score when Ryan Metzbower and Howard scored consecutive goals to knot the score at 9-9 with 13:44 remaining.

Hyland gave the Retrievers the lead back at 10-9 with a goal with 11:18 remaining, but the Hens shut out UMBC the rest of the way. Freshman Dan Deckelbaum scored his first career goal with 6:26 left to tie the score at 10-10 and Overs scored the game-winner off a feed from Howard with 2:04 left. UMBC had the chance to tie the score in the final minute as two Delaware penalties put the Hens two men down with 18 seconds left to play, but Collins stopped a shot by Joe Cahill just before the final buzzer to preserve the win.
