Villanova 12, #11 Delaware 4 April 10, 2004 Wildcats Clamp Down on Blue Hens to Post Upset Victory Boxscore NEWARK, DE -- Villanova University goalkeeper Joseph Canuso posted 17 saves and the Wildcats held the University of Delaware scoreless in the first half on the way to posting a 12-4 men's lacrosse upset over the No. 11 ranked Blue Hens Saturday night at Rullo Stadium. Delaware, which was coming off its first ever Colonial Athletic Association victory last Saturday over Hofstra, was stifled by Canuso and the Villanova defense all night long and had a three-game win streak snapped to fall to 8-3 (1-1 CAA). The loss was the Hens' first in six home games this season and the four goals matched a season-low. Villanova (8-2, 2-1 CAA), which was coming off a 20-11 loss last Saturday to Towson, got four goals and an assist from Marc Creegan while Dan Fanelli, Matt Starker, and Richie Kratz each added two goals. Jordan Hall led the Blue Hens with two goals while Ryan Metzbower scored a goal and dished out an assist and goalkeeper Chris Collins stopped 15 Villanova shots. Delaware's top two scorers, senior Matt Alrich (23 goals, eight assists) and freshman Cam Howard (14 goals, 12 assists), were both held without a point on the evening with Alrich snapping a streak of 24 straight games with at least one point. Howard had scored a goal in all nine of his previous career games. Delaware freshman Alex Smith won 14 of 18 faceoffs but it was enough to stop the Wildcats. Villanova jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime despite 19 shots by the Blue Hens. Starker scored his first goal with 9:47 left in the opening quarter off a feed from Creegan and Creegan added a goal of his own with 9:04 left before intermission for the only scoring of the half. Delaware was held scoreless in the first half for the first time since being blanked by Yale in the first half of a 1994 setback. The Wildcats built the lead up to 6-0 by scoring the first four goals of the second half, including two by Fanelli and one by Creegan. The Blue Hens didn't get on the board until Hall scored with 5:58 left in the third stanza, ending a goal drought of almost 40 minutes. Hall scored again early in the fourth quarter and Bob Meunier (at right) delivered his only goal of the game with 11:21 left to play to cut the lead to 7-3, but Villanova reeled off the next five goals, including two by Creegan, over a span of eight minutes to put the game away.
