#19 Delaware 6 Villanova's Quick Start Ends Hens' Season VILLANOVA, PA -- The University of Delaware fell behind early and could never make up lost ground and dropped a 15-6 decision to host Villanova in a Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse semifinal game Wednesday night at Villanova Stadium. No. 14 ranked Villanova, the tournament No. 2 seed, got three goals each from Brendan O'Donnell and Dan Fanelli on the way to the victory, ending the Blue Hens' season. The Wildcats (12-2) move on to the CAA championship game and will play at top seed and defending champion Towson Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Towson, MD. The No. 11 ranked Tigers advanced with a 6-5 win over No. 4 seed Hofstra Wednesday evening. No. 19 ranked Delaware, the No. 3 seed and a first-time participant in the CAA playoffs, ended the season with a 10-6 mark. The Hens, who rebounded from a 5-10 record a year ago, got two goals and an assist from senior Matt Alrich. The 15 goals was the most allowed by the Hens all season. Delaware freshman Cam Howard added a goal and as assist and fellow rookie Alex Smith scored a goal and won 16 of 25 faceoffs for the Blue Hens. Goalkeeper Chris Collins notched 11 saves. Matt Starker added two goals and two assists and Matt Lucas contributed two goals to aid the Villanova attack. Villanova jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in downing the Hens for the second time this season. The Wildcats downed the Hens 12-4 back on Apr. 10 in a game in which they held Delaware scoreless in the first half and held the Blue Hens to their lowest goal total of the season. O'Donnell, who also added three assists for a six-goal evening, scored twice in the first quarter and assisted on another goal before the Hens could even get a shot on goal. The Hens didn't score their first goal until Joe Trentzsch tallied off a feed from Jordan Hall with 1:48 left in the opening stanza. The Wildcats built the lead up to 9-1 by scoring the first four goals of the second half and the Hens didn't answer until Chad Holmes scored his first goal of the season with 3:24 left before halftime to cut the lead to 9-2. The Wildcats proceeded to score the final two goals of the half and went into intermission up 11-2. After Villanova upped the lead to 12-2 early in the third quarter, the Blue Hens made a brief run, scoring three straight goals on scores by Smith, Howard, and Alrich, the final one with 22 seconds left in the stanza to cut the lead to 12-5. Alrich ended the season as the Hens' leading scorer with 34 goals and 12 assists and became the first UD player since John Grant and Kevin Lavey in 1998 and 1999 to score 30 or more goals in consecutive seasons.
