University of Delaware Men's Lacrosse Picked No. 4 in Pre-Season CAA Coaches Poll

Date: February 8, 2005

RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad, which returns 20 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's squad that posted a 10-6 record and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals, is the No. 4 pick in the pre-season CAA Coaches Poll announced Tuesday.

Two-time defending CAA champion Towson, which has advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times in the last four seasons, was the overwhelming pick to capture yet another title as they earned five first place votes and 25 points from a vote among the six league head coaches.

Hofstra, a 2004 CAA semifinalist, received one first place vote and tied with last year's runner-up Villanova with 18 points for second place while Delaware was fourth with 15 points, Drexel was fifth with eight points, and Sacred Heart was sixth with six points.

The Blue Hens, who will open the 2005 season this Saturday when they host Saint Joseph's at 1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium, return a strong contingent for 27th year Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. Shillinglaw has won 204 games in 26 years at Delaware and 228 games overall in 29 years of college coaching.

Leading the Blue Hens is a solid group of newcomers led by second team All-CAA goalkeeper and third-year starter Chris Collins (8.66 goals allowed per game, .565 save pct. - at right), 2004 CAA Rookie of the Year and second team all-league midfielder Alex Smith (five goals, one assist, .632 faceoff pct.), sophomore attackman and 2004 second team All-CAA pick Cam Howard (19 goals, 20 assists), second team All-CAA senior defender Ian Wright (23 groundballs), senior attackman Andy Hipple (19 goals, 5 assists), and senior midfielder Joe Trentzsch (15 goals, 5 assists).
