of Delaware Men's Lacrosse Picked No. 4 in
Pre-Season CAA Coaches

RICHMOND,
VA -- The University of Delaware men's
lacrosse squad, which returns 20
letterwinners and eight starters from last
year's squad that posted a 10-6 record and
advanced to the Colonial Athletic
Association semifinals, is the No. 4 pick
in the pre-season CAA Coaches Poll
announced Tuesday.
Two-time
defending CAA champion Towson, which has
advanced to the NCAA Tournament three
times in the last four seasons, was the
overwhelming pick to capture yet another
title as they earned five first place
votes and 25 points from a vote among the
six league head coaches.
Hofstra, a
2004 CAA semifinalist, received one first
place vote and tied with last year's
runner-up Villanova with 18 points for
second place while Delaware was fourth
with 15 points, Drexel was fifth with
eight points, and Sacred Heart was sixth
with six points.
The Blue
Hens, who will open the 2005 season this
Saturday when they host Saint Joseph's at
1 p.m. at Rullo Stadium, return a strong
contingent for 27th year Delaware head
coach Bob Shillinglaw. Shillinglaw has won
204 games in 26 years at Delaware and 228
games overall in 29 years of college
coaching.
Leading
the Blue Hens is a solid group of
newcomers led by second team All-CAA
goalkeeper and third-year starter Chris
Collins (8.66 goals allowed per game, .565
save pct. - at right), 2004 CAA Rookie of
the Year and second team all-league
midfielder Alex Smith (five goals, one
assist, .632 faceoff pct.), sophomore
attackman and 2004 second team All-CAA
pick Cam Howard (19 goals, 20 assists),
second team All-CAA senior defender Ian
Wright (23 groundballs), senior attackman
Andy Hipple (19 goals, 5 assists), and
senior midfielder Joe Trentzsch (15 goals,
5 assists).
