RICHMOND,
VA -- University of Delaware senior
goalkeeper Chris Collins (righ), who led
the Blue Hen men's lacrosse team to an
11-5 upset win over No. 12 Towson in their
conference opener Saturday night, has been
named the Colonial Athletic Association
Player of the Week for the period ending
March 28.
Collins, a
three-year starter from Yorktown Heights,
NY (Lakeland Panas High School), was
outstanding in the nets in the Blue Hens'
only game of the week, allowing just five
goals while matching a career-high with 19
saves as Delaware toppled the two-time
defending CAA champions and downed Towson
for the first time since the 2000 season.
Towson was the highest ranked opponent the
Blue Hens have defeated since downing No.
11 Hofstra 8-7 in 2000.
Collins
faced 41 Towson shots on the night and
posted 19 saves, matching his career-high
set vs. Ohio State in 2003. Collins turned
back five shots in the first quarter, two
in the second, four in the third, and
eight in the final stanza as the Hens held
off the Tigers. He also recorded four
groundballs during the game.
He
currently ranks third in the CAA in goals
allowed (7.16) and third in save
percentage (.611) while ranking second in
saves per game (11.00). He ranks fifth
all-time at Delaware with 475 saves.
Collins is
the third Delaware player honored by the
CAA this season after sophomore midfielder
Jordan Hall was named CAA Player of the
Week March 14 and freshman midfielder
Vincent Giordano was named CAA Rookie of
the Week Feb. 28.
Also
honored by the CAA Tuesday was Hofstra
midfielder Mike Unterstein, who was named
CAA Rookie of the Week.
Delaware,
which has won two straight and four of its
last five games, improved to 6-3 overall
(1-0 CAA) heading into this Saturday's CAA
matchup with Sacred Heart (4-3, 0-0 CAA).
The teams will square off at 7 p.m. at
Rullo Stadium.
