Blue Hens Clinch CAA Playoff Home Game with 7-6 Men's Lacrosse Victory at Drexel

Date: April 23, 2005

PHILADELPHIA --  The University of Delaware used a big second quarter to overcome an early 4-0 deficit and later scored three straight goals in the second half to clinch a key 7-6 Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse victory over host Drexel under heavy rain conditions Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens (9-4, 4-1 CAA) won their second straight game and were winners for the fifth time in their last six games to clinch a home berth in the upcoming CAA semifinals May 4. Delaware, which will host a home post-season game for the first time since 2000, can clinch its first-ever CAA regular season title if Towson defeats Hofstra later Saturday evening.

Should Hofstra defeat Towson, the Hens would be the No. 2 seed. The semifinal winners will advance to the CAA championship May 7 at the highest remaining seed. The CAA champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Delaware freshman midfielder Vincent Giordano, this week's CAA Rookie of the Week, and Andy Hipple (right) each scored two goals while Dave Powers had a goal and an assist and Joe Trentzsch dished out a career-high three assists. Trentzsch had a 13-game goal-scoring streak snapped but scored a point for the 15th straight game since last season. Sophomore Alex Smith, the national leader in faceoffs, won 13 of 16 faceoffs to pace the Hens, who outshot Drexel 38-23.

Drexel (8-5, 1-4 CAA) lost its second straight game and fell for the fourth time in its last five games. Delaware, which had defeated Drexel 23 straight times before losing each of the three meetings, downed the Dragons for the first time since 2001. Each of the last five meetings between the two teams have been decided by four goals or less.

Six different Drexel players scored a goal with Greg Dougherty also adding an assist. Goalkeeper Bruce Bickford posted 11 saves in goal.

Drexel jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with Devin Regan capping the game-opening 4-0 run with a goal with 7:12 left in the first half. But the Hens came right back to tie the game as Dan Deckelbaum got Delaware on the board with a goal with 4:58 left in the half followed by goals from Giordano and Powers just 41 seconds apart. Marty Kupprion scored just his fifth goal of the season on a man-up opportunity with 59 seconds left in the stanza to tie the game at 4-4 at intermission.

The Dragons regained the lead with 4:44 left in the third period on a goal by Yoni Cohen, but the Hens answered with another pivotal run, scoring three straight goals, including goals by Giordano and Hipple just 23 seconds apart in the final minute of the stanza. Hipple's second goal of the game with 5:07 left to play upped the Hen lead to 7-5 and proved to be the game-winner. Drexel's Chris O'Connor cut the lead to one at 7-6 with a goal with 2:54 remaining, but Delaware held off the charge to clinch the win.
