Delaware's Vincent Giordano Named CAA Rookie of the Week for Third Time

DATE: April 25, 2005

RICHMOND, VA -- For the second straight week and for the third time this season University of Delaware men's lacrosse freshman midfielder Vincent Giordano (right) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week.

A freshman midfielder from Moorestown, NJ (Moorestown High School), Giordano played a key role in Delaware's pivotal 7-6 win over CAA foe Drexel Saturday in Philadelphia.

Giordano scored two goals as Delaware (9-4, 4-1 CAA) won its second straight game, its fifth win in the last six games, and clinched the CAA regular season title. No. 1 seed Delaware will host No. 4 Hofstra in the CAA semifinals May 4 at Rullo Stadium.

Drexel jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half before the Hens rallied. Giordano scored his first goal late in the second quarter to cut the lead to 4-2 and scored again with 39 seconds left in the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5.

He recorded his third multiple goal game of the season and increased his goal total to 12 this season. He earned CAA honors last week for his play in Delaware's win over Villanova and was also honored as CAA Rookie of the Week back on March 1 as he scored a goal in each of the Blue Hens' first three games, helping Delaware get off to a 2-1 start with wins over Saint Joseph's and Lehigh.

In addition to Giordano, also honored by the CAA was Towson sophomore midfielder Matt Eckerl, who was named the CAA Player of the Week after leading the Tigers to a 10-6 win over Hofstra.

Delaware will travel to Oakland, NJ to take on Yale Wednesday night and return home for its regular season finale Saturday to take on St. John's at 7 p.m.
