Shuts Down Hofstra, Howard Scores Twice as
Blue Hens Advance to CAA Championship Game
with 8-5 Victory

quarter and the University of Delaware
defense shut down Hofstra as the Blue Hens
posted an 8-5 victory over Hofstra in a
Colonial Athletic Association men's
lacrosse semifinal game Wednesday night at
Rullo Stadium.
The top
seed and No. 16 ranked Blue Hens won their
first CAA playoff game in four years in
the league and earned the right to host
No. 2 seed and 11th ranked Towson in the
CAA championship game Saturday at 8 p.m.
at Rullo Stadium. The two-time defending
champion Tigers advanced with a 5-4 win
over No. 3 seed Villanova Wednesday night.
The winner
of Saturday's game will capture the CAA
title and earn an automatic berth into the
NCAA Tournament. Delaware is looking to
win its first conference championship and
its first NCAA Tournament appearance since
the 1999 season when the Blue Hens won the
America East title and advanced to the
national quarterfinals.
Delaware
(11-4), which won its fourth straight game
and captured its seventh win in the last
eight games, broke away from a 3-3
halftime tie by outscoring Hofstra 4-0 in
the third quarter on the way to the win.
The Hens avenged a 13-3 loss to Hofstra
April 12 at Rullo Stadium.
"We
encouraged our guys to be patient, possess
the ball longer, and get us some better
opportunites for quality shots tonight,"
said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw.
"We slowed them (Hofstra) down a little
and that was the big difference. Our guys
played their hearts out tonight and I know
they'll have that same look in their eyes
Saturday night in the championship
game."
No. 19
ranked Hofstra, the No. 4 seed, ended its
season with an 8-8 record and lost to the
Hens for the first time in three
post-season meetings. Tim Treubig scored
twice and dished out an assist while John
Keysor and Athan Ianucci each contributed
a goal and an assist.
Seven
different Delaware players scored a goal
with Joe Trentzsch and John Carrozza each
scoring once and dishing out an assist.
Goalkeeper Chris Collins turned back 13
Pride shots to notch the win. Trentzsch
has now scored a point in 17 straight
games since last season.
Hofstra
jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period
as John Orsen scored just 1:43 into the
game and Treubig scored his first goal
with 8:55 left in the stanza. Delaware
came back to tie it on consecutive goals
by Andy Hipple and Trentzsch early in the
second half, and after Hofstra went back
up on a goal by Ianucci with 8:13
remaining, sent the game into intermission
tied at 3-3 on a goal by Dan Deckelbaum
with just 1:30 left in the half.
The Hens
put the game away in the third quarter as
they outscored the Pride 4-0 to take an
insurmountable 7-3 lead into the final
stanza. Howard scored twice in the stanza,
putting the Hens up for good at 4-3 with
13:10 left in the period and upping the
lead to 6-3 with a goal with 4:13 left.
The Hens made it 7-3 when Jarryd Knouse
scored his first career goal with just one
second left in the third quarter off a
feed from Chad Holmes.
Hofstra
cut the lead to 7-4 four minutes into the
final quarter on a goal by Treubig but
could never get closer as the Hens added
some insurance on a goal by Carrozza, his
first goal since April 16, with 2:43 left
to play.
