Lattimore, Metzbower Join Delaware Men's Lacrosse Coaching Staff

Date: October 28, 2004

NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware men's lacrosse head coach Bob Shillinglaw has announced the addition of Judd Lattimore and former Blue Hen standout Ryan Metzbower to the coaching staff.

Lattimore, a 2001 graduate of the University of North Carolina, will serve as a volunteer assistant while Metzbower, who will earn his degree from Delaware this year, will serve as a student assistant coach.

They join a staff that includes Shillinglaw and full-time assistant coach Greg Carroll. Shillinglaw will begin his 30th season as head coach at Delaware this spring while Carroll will begin his sixth season. The Hens will return 21 letterwinners from last year's squad that posted a 10-6 record and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals.

Lattimore, a native of Auburn, NY, comes to Delaware after serving as top assistant and offensive coordinator at NCAA Division II power Limestone College in Gaffney, SC the last two seasons under head coach T.W. Johnson

The Saints posted a 13-3 record in 2003 and a 15-2 mark last season, advancing to the NCAA II championship game each season. The Saints averaged 19.3 goals per game in 2004, the highest mark of any NCAA team at any division, and set a school record with 314 total goals. The 15-2 record was the best in school history. While at Limestone, Lattimore coached 10 All-Americans.

He began his coaching career at Geneseo State University in 2002, serving as top assistant and offensive coordinator for a squad that was nationally ranked and enjoyed its best season in 20 years.

Lattimore, who earned his degree in interpersonal and organizational communications from North Carolina in 2001, enjoyed a standout career for the Tar Heels. He was a three-year starter at midfielder and earned Inside Lacrosse Pre-Season All-American honors as a junior in 2000. He scored three goals each in 1997 and 1998, leading the 1998 squad to the NCAA Tournament. He missed the entire 1999 and 2000 seasons due to an injury but returned in 2001 and scored two goals and dished out four assists for the Tar Heels.

While at Auburn High School, he earned All-American honors in both lacrosse and swimming and competed in the North-South National Senior All-Star Game.

Metzbower, a native of Severna Park, MD (St. Mary's High School), completed an outstanding four-year career for the Blue Hens last spring, serving as a co-captain and recording 15 goals and six assists from his midfield position to earn second team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors. A four-year standout, he finished his career with 79 goals and 26 assists and his 105 points rank 22nd all-time in Delaware history.

He earned America East Rookie of the Year and All-America East second team notice as a freshman in 2000 when he scored 31 goals and led the Blue Hens to a 10-6 record and the league regular season title. After sitting out the entire 2001 season with a knee injury, he returned to score 19 goals and dish out four assists in 2002 and earned second team All-CAA honors in 2003 after scoring 15 goals and four assists.

The Blue Hens will open the 2005 season Feb. 12 vs. Saint Joseph's at Rullo Stadium.
